Alaska’s annual state fair opened today met by sunshine and assault? Around 5 pm at the Palmer, Alaska state fair Sidney Irvin Hill 52 was approached by state fair security for carrying a large sign by Larouche reading “Impeach Obama Now”. “Sid” Hill, who is also disabled and was holding a crutch was then physically dragged to the ground and sat on by an as of now unnamed but large security guard. He was held in this way on the ground despite not struggling and clearly stating he was being hurt.
As the crowd angered and some even moved to defend Hill an off duty Alaska state trooper stepped in. Hill remained held until the police arrived and arrested him. He is now being charged with Assault 4, disorderly conduct, and trespassing despite paying for his fair ticket for nothing more than voicing his opinion in print in public peacefully about Obama. Hill was carrying a gun as Alaska is a legal carry conceal state. Palmer police are holding the gun as evidence and for safekeeping.
The Alaska State fair grounds are not public property, but are open to the public upon purchase of a ticket. Firearms are not legal on the premises. Protesting political agendas is not allowed but also not posted. The security guards at no time mention this to Hill. They claim he was belligerent and he assaulted them. While Hill is vocal and in places profane no assault is seen on films from the incident except that of the guards towards Sydney.
The entire incident was filmed and has been uploaded to YouTube. It can be viewed here:
Sid Hill was arraigned at 1 pm at the Palmer, Alaska court house. His bail is set of $500 and was posted on 8/30/2010.
The Alaska police and fair officials are arguing Hill had no right to be protesting on fair grounds. Syndey is claiming his freedom of speech was violated as well as his right to a peaceful protest. That the Alaska State fair grounds are not public property is overall not public knowledge. This can be seen in the over 500 comments on the YouTube video as of the writing of the article. Hill believed he was on public property.
Hill’s lawyer is Joshua Fannon.
