Cliff Lee continued his dominant postseason pitching career, allowing only one run in a complete game victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The win eliminated the Rays from the postseason and allowed the Texas Rangers to advance to the American League Championship Series for the first time in franchise history.
Lee recorded 11 strikeouts and refused to allow a walk in his nine innings of work.
Tampa Bay’s David Price lost his second game of the postseason, allowing three runs on eight hits in six innings.
The Rangers began the night with a run in the top of the first as Elvis Andrus scored after stealing second on a ground ball by Josh Hamilton.
After the Rays tied the game in the bottom of the third, Nelson Cruz hit a double, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by Kelly Shoppach to give Texas a 2-1 lead.
Vladamir Guerrero scored on a force out in the sixth to increase the Rangers’ lead to 3-1. Texas tacked on two more runs in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
Cliff Lee became the first pitcher in Texas Rangers’ history to win two postseason games. The Rangers’ ALDS victory marks the first time in franchise history that Texas has won more than one postseason game in a season.
Texas will host the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series beginning Friday October 15 in Arlington. The 2010 ALCS marks the fourth time the Rangers and Yankees will meet in the postseason. The Yankees won nine of the ten postseason games between the two clubs, defeating the Rangers in three ALDS series in the 1990s.
The Rangers will have home field advantage for the series, however Texas has never won a postseason game at home with all three victories against the Rays coming in St. Petersburg and Texas’ only other postseason win coming at old Yankee Stadium.
Projected starters for Game 1 of the ALCS are C. C. Sabathia for New York and C. J. Wilson for Texas.
