Actress Alicia Silverstone is mainly known for her role in the 1995 hit “Clueless”. The thirty four year old blonde hasn`t changed much since her teenage years. In fact, she probably looks better now than she did ten or fifteen years ago. What is her secret to youthful appearance and good health? No bottox or diet pills for Alicia, instead, she swears that a vegan diet keep her looking her best. This animal rights activist and PETA supporter describes exactly how to choose food in order to feel healthy, look trim, and save the planet while doing it.
In the very beggining of the book Alicia opens up about her love for animals that started when she was still a child and her first unsuccessful tries of sticking to a vegetarian diet. Alicia`s explanation of why she decided to become a vegatarian is simple but to the point. According to her, if she eats other animals why doesn`t she just eat her own dog? A logical idea turned Alicia into what she is today – a full on vegan. Since then she started to influence other people to reconsider their eating habbits, especially her husband, who began to follow the vegan diet in order to support his wife.
After the reader gets to know Alicia as a person and her reasons behind eliminating animal flesh and animal byproducts from her diet, she starts to intruduce the main arguments against meat, dairy, and processed food consumption. Medical and scientific research is described in easy to understand terms. The text doesn`t bombard the reader with statistics and percentages, instead it creates more awarness of the human body and how it reacts to different types of products and nutrients. Chapters two though four inform the reader about the negative aspects of the meat and dairy industry and give a couple of stories about famous athletes or simply believers in the vegan lifestyle who transformed their lives for the better by sticking to a clean diet and exercise.
Alicia then moves from what she calls “nasty foods” that do nothing good for your body to nutritious foods that can not only satisfy the tummy but heal the body as well. She discusses how to get all the necessary vitamins and minerals that meat and dairy provide without actually putting any in your mouth. She shares the alternatives for common “nasty foods” or even better replacements. A basic shopping list makes a transition from a hamburger to tofu not as scary.
The best part of “The kind diet”, is the fact that Alicia doesn`t try to convince anyone that meat-eaters are bad or that if a person doesn`t follow the vegan diet to the fullest ,no benefits can come from it. In fact, she let`s the readers choose to what extent they want to change and how many of the vegan eating habbits they want to include in their daily routine. There for, she introduces three different eating levels. The most “painless” of the three is what she calls “flirting” where you occaisionally replace dairy products and meat with soy, beans, and nuts. There is no pressure so there is no need to be ashamed to eat a piece of steak when the desire comes over you. The vegan plan is more strict where meat and dairy products should not be consumed but some processed foods are not off limits. The most drastic way of eating that Alicia introduces in her book is the “Superhero”. This diet consists of all-natural products, no meat, dairy, or processed foods.
Of course, as any other diet book “The kind diet” has an extensive section full of delicious recipies. Anything from pasta to dessert is included. All recipies require pretty simple ingredients which reassures the readers that you don`t have to be a rich celebrity to be a vegan. It is actually the opposite, since most of the ingredients in Alicia`s dishes are veggies, fruit, grains, and beans that can be purchased at a decent price.
Alicia Silverstone`s “The kind diet” can`t even be called a diet book because weight loss isn`t discussed deeply. The main idea behind her eating plan is to clean out the body, get rid of all the waste that weighs it down and to nuorish the body with natural, nutrient rich foods. The the body will automatically adjust and the weight will go up or down according to the way it was meant to be in the first place. And if an animal or two get saved in the process that`s always a plus. Alicia`s simple and pressure-free approach to eating and life in general inspire every reader if not become a vegan than to at least try out her tasty recipies and consider exchanging that daily steak or chicken breast by some grains or beans. This is a must read for everyone interested in the ways to achieve a better health and anyone who is simply bored with the regular meat and dairy rich diet and would like to occaisionally experiment and for example try out Alicia`s “Radicchio pizza with Truffle oil.”
