Second Gator Caught In Chicago This Month
‘Alligator Bob’, an expert in reptiles from the Chicago Herpetological Society caught a three foot long alligator today in the Chicago River on the city’s northwest side! This is actually the second gator found in the river this month.
Alligator Sightings in Chicago
This summer alligator sightings are becoming a somewhat common occurance in Chicago. A family spotted the alligator on Sunday while boating on the Chicago River and ‘Alligator Bob’ was soon called in to help. News of an alligator in the river spread quickly, and brought many residents to the shore over the past few days hoping to sight the gator. He had since been spotted by news teams and residents alike who witnessed the alligator sunbathing on the shore and swimming with the ducks.
Oddly enough few residents were concerened about safety despite having an alligator running loose in the city. Instead, the concern was primarily for the safety of the alligator and some expressed outrage about irresponsible pet owners who abandon pets inappropriately..
The Alligator Gets a Name
The alligator has now been named Sherman by the man who found him. He was caught with a net today near Belmont ,and according to “Alligator Bob,’ the reptile had definitely been kept as a pet. Alligators do not normally live in the Chicago area and had he not been caught soon he would surely have died in a month or so with colder weather approaching.
Where Did The Gator Come From
“Alligator Bob” described Sherman the Alligator as too clean to have been in the river more than a few weeks. He explained that normally alligators would have some scratches from rocks and things from living in the wild but Sherman was in good condition. He was obviously well fed and cared for. The only unanswered question is how the alligator ended up in the river in the first place.
Sherman the Alligator is thought to be about three years old and will be quarantined for a few months. If all goes well he will be moved to an alligator in the south.
