I have always believed that people really do see “ghosts”.I even feel as if the spirits of departed loved ones can somehow leave such an imprint on this life that they never truly go away. This however does not explain what I witnessed one night while home alone.
It was a rare thing to have the house to myself: there was usually always someone else there. My roommate had gone out with some friends from work so it was just me and our pets! I fed the cats and had just finished cleaning up the kitchen from my own dinner when I heard our dog scratching at the door.”Bad girl, you know better” I said automatically as I walked into the front room. She wasn’t near the door,I looked around and saw her lying on the rug in front of the couch she just raised her head as if to ask who I was talking to. “Annie were you just at the door?” I asked her.Annie just looked at me and gave a soft woof her way of saying “no I am trying to sleep.” I put it out of my mind and turned on the T.V.
The phone rang so I paused my movie & went to answer it.”Hello, no she isnt here” I told the caller. As I hung up I distinctly heard the movie I had been watching start again.”This is weird I know I put that thing on pause” I thought. Now the only way to pause movies on my player is by using the remote which I had in my hand still. That’s when I heard the scratching again.Annie raised her head, so she heard it too.It sounded like it was coming from the back door.I remembered that several years ago the house had been set on fire deliberately and some of the previous owners pet dogs had perished in the flames. ” Animals don’t haunt places….do they?” I asked myself
I could not wait til my roommate got home to tell her what I had experienced. She listened and instead of giving me the ole “shes crazy” look asked me where I had heard the scratching.,so I showed her.” L___ you remember the story of how this place burned down a while back?” “Yes ” I replied . “Well this used to be the back porch area where the old lady kept her dogs, this was where the firefighters found all 4 of them”. I was speechless,I remember talking to the neighbors about this shortly after I moved in.They all said that the dogs had scrtached so hard at the door to escape that they had bloodied their paws and there gouge marks in the wood of the frame. They were still trying to scratch their way out to freedom and escape from the flames.
I moved shortly after that but my roommate stayed for another year ,she said that all the rest of the time she was there she would occasionally hear the dogs scratching to be rescued. She said she was so used to the sound that she would tune it out.Although she took to leaving that door open just a crack to give the ghost dogs a chance in the afterlife that they didn’t get in this one.
