After months of speculation about who would replace American Idol judge Simon Cowell, then Ellen Degeneres, and finally Kara DioGuardi at the judges table on America’s #1-rated television program, Ryan Seacrest confirmed at a press conference — which was simulcast online on the American Idol website — in Los Angeles that the two new judges joining original judge Randy Jackson on the panel for the show’s 10th season would be actress/singer Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. Doing away with the pregnant pauses and the drama that he usually incorporates for American Idol, MTV reported that Seacrest simply introduced video clips of Lopez and Tyler and welcomed them to the show.
After a video montage of Steven Tyler’s colorful career as the lead singer for “America’s greatest rock band,” Aerosmith, the 62-year-old stood and hugged Seacrest, saying that he felt “fabulous” and “wonderful” about becoming part of American Idol.
About his choosing to become an American Idol judge, Tyler said, “It’s being a part of something much bigger than yourself. I want to bring some rock to this roller coaster and show you that if you got the heart, you got the talent and you got the feeling to do this, you could be the next American Idol.”
After Tyler’s introduction, Jennifer Lopez received a video montage treatment as well, one that touted her singing and acting career. An openly avid fan of the show, Lopez mentored on the show in the past. But what had been her reason for joining the judges panel of American Idol?
“I’m looking for the next Michael Jackson,” she told Ryan Seacrest in front of a Los Angeles crowd there to audition for the show. “Like Randy [Jackson] said, we’re looking for the best American Idol ever. I’m really excited. I really am.”
With the signature phrase, “This is American Idol!” Ryan Seacrest ushered out the entire panel: Lopez, Tyler, and Jackson.
Although Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez are just being confirmed as the new judges, stories that they were already “in” as judges have been rampant on the Internet for weeks. Cryptic remarks by Tyler were replaced by his Aerosmith bandmates talking about his upcoming stint on American Idol in various interviews. Lopez’s camp would never confirm the rumors, but it seems that she has been in negotiations with the producers of American Idol for months.
The dual confirmation also puts to rest any and all speculation as to who would take the vacated seats on the judges panel. Among those rumored to have been in consideration were Elton John, Justin Timberlake, Chris Isaak, Shania Twain, Bret Michaels, Jessica Simpson, and Harry Connick Jr.
American Idol Season 10 is in the last of its auditioning phase. Season 10 is scheduled to kick off on Jan. 12.
