Gayle Elleven of Fort Worth, Texas is a 40 year old woman who teaches literacy. Her story is told in the April 2010 Ladies Home Journal.
She specifically tutors adults who are reading between the second to sixth grade levels. With the use of books, magazines and websites she finds creative ways of helping them to become better readers.
When asked why she does it she states the following, “A friend once told me that she thinks that educational charities are most effective because they help break the cycle of poverty”. Armed and focused with this knowledge she found an organization that was a perfect match for her.
While she has witnessed many success stories in her endeavors there is one that clearly stands out. A woman that she has tutored is now attending college with the goal of receiving a degree. That is simply incredible.
And while she recognizes that there are sometimes challenges that present themselves, her students manage to get there.
Gayle Elleven you have proven that a few hours of tutoring is making a difference. There is no doubt that you have been an inspiration to so many.
And because of your tireless efforts, you are my choice for Today’s American Shero. May you and your students continue to have much success.
