You never know what experiences in your life will lead you to do. An article entitled, Sweet Dreams in the April 2010 Ladies Home Journal bears this out. It was written by Nancy Gottesman.
Emily Gertson used to be an elementary teacher in Boling, Texas. The school district that she was employed with was low-income.
According to the article, Emily Gertson often worried about the underprivileged children in her class: the ones who never had enough to eat, wore the same outfit days in a row and didn’t have their own school supplies”.
She is no longer teaching because she is a stay-at-home mom. But the memories of these children were still imprinted on her mind. Choosing to do something to help, she contacted the local Child Protection Services (CPS). Her idea was to hold a pajama drive.
She contacted friends, church members and the local Cub Scout troop to inform them of this idea. As a result 100 pairs of pajamas were donated.
Building upon this successful endeavor, she joined forces with her neighbor Shelley DeLuna. After 6 weeks they had received 1500 pairs of new pajamas. Additionally, items such as diapers, shampoo, soap and toys were donated. Recently they included backpacks, sneakers and school supplies to their wish list.
Emily Gertson I’m grateful that you acted upon your desire to do something positive for children. And because of this many young children have benefitted because of your vision. I am delighted to announce that you are today’s American Shero. May you have continued success.
