In December of 2009 Chuck Sibley was faced with a very important decision to make. He, like so many business owners had been feeling the results of a spiraling economy.
He is the manager of an engine plant called Navistar Diesel. Not wanting to lay off 50 employees he came up with a very creative idea.
A story written by Lorenzo Benet entitled Saving Jobs by Helping Neighbors can be seen in the People Magazine.
Mr. Sibley was able to keep his workers on the payroll. However, instead of working at the plant they began volunteering in the community. During this time they helped build new homes, worked at the Salvation Army and built more than 80 much-needed wheelchair ramps.
As a result of their efforts, they were back to work in four months time. Chuck Sibley says, “Employees banded together to help other people, and they felt taken care of. For me, that’s a good feeling”.
So today Mr. Sibley I honor you as Today’s American Hero. You turned a potentially disastrous situation into something positive for the community and your employees. Furthermore, you helped them look beyond themselves in order to make someone else’s life a little more pleasant.
May you and your employees have much success in your business endeavors.
