The models are getting ready for their makeovers, Mr. Demille so bring on the lights, camera and action (and a practical joke!) Three of the models, Ann, Lexie and Rhianna (no, not the superstar singer) decide to play a prank on their fellow MITs (models-in-training) by putting together a fake list of makeovers that was “left behind” after a visit from Tyra Banks to the model house. One by one, the models read their supposed makeover and within minutes panic ensues. Adding fuel to the fire, Lexie, the 18 year-old from Geneva, Illinois, offers an Academy Award winning performance as Best Supporting Actress in a Hoax after reacting to the idea that she is going to get a strawberry afro. Freaked, the girls dismay over their anticipated entry into the world of high fashion makeovers.
The next day the girls arrive at the Charles Penzone salon and anticipate the worst from the list, but are (pleasantly) surprised to see that their expectations of a hair disaster turn out pretty well. Of course, a few girls shed tears, cop ‘tude and grovel over their new looks. The list of nay Sayers and complainers include Liz, 21, who gets a super short cut, and Terra, 24, one of two sisters in the competition that can’t seem to get past her super trendy, but unexpected cut and pull it together for a fantastic photo.
Following the shoot, the girls are given the news that one of them will be sent packing that moment. Based on their photo shoot and their attitude during the makeover process, Mr. Jay and Miss J announce that Terra’s drama-filled response to her new look and lack of ability to pull through make her a prime candidate for elimination. She is handed her walking papers and instructed to learn how to control her attitude. Her sister Chris, the 5’10 ½” beauty from Arlington TX, sheds several tears, but vows to bring her A-game to the next photo shoot.
Two other girls experience added makeover bonuses with Chelsey, the Boise, Idaho native, getting her gap between her teeth widened, a clear homage to the great Lauren Hutton and 20 year-old Kacey receiving contact lenses so she can pitch those spectacles and let the world see her sparkly brown eyes.
Post makeovers the girls are whisked off to their photo shoot on the beach where they will be photographed as dark angels falling from heaven. Adding certain fire to the shoot is the addition of finely chiseled male models. Each girl is instructed to select a word to portray and after being hoisted in the air (thanks to an uncomfortable harness) the girls aim to create a great shot using their bodies, their male models and their chosen word for inspiration. The shoot proofs tough for many of the models that are unable to negotiate the height, the look and the feel of this assignment.
Including Tyra Banks, the judges for Cycle 15 include longtime judge Nigel Barker, former Vogue Editor-at-large André Leon Talley and guest judge, costume and fashion designer (and stylist for shows like Sex and the City and Ugly Betty,) Patricia Field. After reviewing and critiquing the photos, the judges report that they are disappointed with the MIT’s shots and will have to grade on a curve. After the deliberation the judges choose four girls who manage to embody their chosen word in their photos. Ann, the 6’2″ 19 year old wins best picture while Lexie and Sara, the California girl who went from blonde to chocolate brown are selected for the bottom two. After a tense few moments and Tyra’s customary speech, Sara is sent home and the remaining 11 models breathe a sigh of relief. The next episode of America’s Next Top Model airs on the CW on Wednesday, September 29 at 8 pm.
