Ahhhhhhh Greece. The fantastic, sunny Islands. The gorgeous blues of the Mediterranean Sea. The historical impact of each of it’s intricate, ancient structures. The pungent, flavorful food, and the happy-go-lucky personalities that abound there. Makes you want to sit in a Greek cafe, staring out over their white-washed roofs that lead artfully to the water and smoke a cigarette. Alas, that will no longer be allowed. Oh you can sit in the cafe and stare out, just no smoking.
Greece’s new slogan, “cut smoking, gain life” has been put in effect. There is a nationwide ban that states there can be no smoking at private and public work places and establishments. Unfortunately, if you break the law, right now, there is no clear idea of what the punishment will be. Greece has tried to ban smoking before, but if was unsuccessful, so they need to work on their strategy, but at least enforcing the rule, putting up signs etc… is a start.
Businesses, especially cafes and bars and afraid they will lose customer business. If patrons can’t sit and enjoy a smoke, they assume they just won’t come. Smoking is seen as fun and enjoyment. You sit with a cup of coffee and friend and a smoke.
But the Health Minister and the Greek Prime Minister want the Greek people to learn health and be healthy and institute a new way of living in Greece. Believe me, people who want to smoke, will smoke, whether they have to get up and go outside to do it, or have to trek a long way to their cars or homes to smoke in them.
Good for Greece, though, for toughening up. Believe you me, tourists will visit here no matter what, smokers and non-smokers alike, because gosh darn it, you are just too beautiful to pass up. No matter what.
