Dear Carmelo (and Lala and Kiyan) Anthony:
Please. Just. Stay. In. Denver.
We love you here.
We need you here.
It’s been a beautiful seven years.
You’ve done something not even Dikembe Mutumbo, a basketball legend could not do when he played for us. You have rallied Denver around the Nuggets and made us proud of our team. You’ve brought an Olympic Gold medal home to us. And we appreciate it. A lot. You’ve taken us further in the game than we’ve ever gone, and for that we thank you.
Playing for New York would be downright silly. It’d be like being best friends with the bully on the playground after he beat you up. Remember? The hit Isaiah Thomas ordered on you as he mouthed “don’t go to the net” when you were slaughtering the Knicks? And go to the net you did!! It’s your job to do so, and remember their retaliation? And you defended yourself and your team with the fierceness of a mother lion protecting her cubs. Remember how that incident caused you to miss a ridiculous amount of games, when Allen Iversen was brought in to help keep the team afloat? I remember the post-game interview A.I. gave in which he was asked about his excitement for your additional presence in the next game and all he replied was “MELLLLOOO!!!”
His response has become a phrase we Nugg fans chant with such fervor it seems impossible that a team would even exist without your smiling face making shots. Even after the A.I. trade, and even I was skeptical, you and Chauncey created pure court magic for Denver fans. He may be Mr. Big Shot, but you Melo, are not playing in Chauncey’s shadow-you two lead the team with a sense of harmony unparalleled in professional sports.
Especially since we now know the severity of Birdman and K-Marts injuries, and the possibility of a J.R. Smith trade, Denver needs you more than ever. And you need us. Signing an extension for another team is a risky move. It’s like marrying someone before you go on a blind date with them. And given next season’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, financially speaking, staying in D-town is the smartest move. You know you have chemistry with the team and the city. You know you can win a championship here. And we know without your infectious smile on the court, games just won’t be the same.
Now, as for Lala’s career, which of course a man should honor his wife’s wishes and goals, but there have been plenty of stars to make it huge out of Denver. Pam Grier, Tim Allen, Don Cheadle, India.Arie, Philip Bailey (from Earth, Wind & Fire), Anna Sophia Robb, T.J. Miller, Douglas Fairbanks, The Fray, hell even Duane “Dog” Chapman’s from D-Town, and he has a reality TV show he films here. Umm and lest we not forget hometown hero Chauncey Billups, he’s from the Mile High! And I think we can all agree that he seems to be doing alright. Success doesn’t depend on your geography, it’s based on your talent, and we know you’ve got it girl! Plus, it’s a great place to raise kids.
I hope by the time I’ve sent this letter, you’ll have signed on to stay with us Melo.
It really is the best choice.
All the best,
Nuggets Fan for Life
