Once again a naturalized American citizen has been arrested in connection with plots to aid terrorism and kill Americans. Farooque Ahmed, originally from Pakistan, was arrested for conspiring to aid terrorist for the purpose of terrorist acts against the U.S. According to federal officials his contacts were FBI undercover agents. Whether that is accurate is unknown.
According to Neil MacBride, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia said, “it’s chilling that a man from Ashburn is accused of casing rail stations with the goal of killing as many Metro riders as possible through simultaneous bomb attacks.” He went on to pat law enforcement on the back for having the ability to seek out and neutralize people wanting to harm citizens of the U.S.
According to the indictment, Ahmed met repeatedly with individuals he thought were affiliated with Al Qaeda to discuss “jihad.” Luckily it was undercover agents. Ahmed stated that he might be ready to travel overseas to conduct jihad. He first wanted to complete the pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in November. It was reported that he participated in the alleged surveillance and video of Arlington National Cemetery Metrorail station. Then in August he allegedly participated in surveillance of the Courthouse, Pentagon City and Crystal City Metrorail stations outside of Washington.
On September 28, 2010 in a hotel room in Herndon, Va, Ahmed suggested using suitcases with rollers instead of backpacks to transport bombs and that he wanted to kill as many military personnel as he could.
Government officials claim that citizens were never in danger and that the activities of Ahmed were always monitored. The question lingering is what did he do to be discovered? How did the FBI and other agencies come to know Ahmed? And the big question that I have is why did the arrest take place at this time? Was there a possibility that waiting would endanger Americans or was the arrest timed to be before the mid-term elections? We may never know those answers.
So far very little information is being disclosed about Ahmed. He is 34 years old and from Ashburn, Va, but his marital status and employment information has not been released.
Monday, four men were convicted for plotting to bomb a Bronx synagogue was caught by the same type of sting operation as Ahmed. Sentencing for the four men will not take place until March but each faces life in prison. The interest in this case is that the men claim that they would not have planned such a thing if it had not been for undercover FBI agents prodding them to carry out the suggested plot. Hopefully the FBI is not putting so much pressure on certain people that they feel there is no other choice but to do as suggested.
He is to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
