Antonio Margarito face surgery is very necessary after Saturday. The Antonio Margarito face pictures from Saturday told the story, after he was pummeled endlessly by Manny Pacquiao. For 12 straight rounds, Pacquiao had his way with the underdog, as even he wanted it to end earlier. Instead, he left the challenger with one eye closed, another eye nearly closed, and an orbital bone fractured. As such, if the face of Margarito is to look normal soon, he has to get surgery first.
Losing against Pacquiao is the least of Margarito’s concerns right now, as he remains in the hospital. His facial damage needs to be repaired by surgery, which he will get tomorrow. Such a move reflects how badly Saturday’s fight went for him, and how it perhaps should have ended sooner.
In the later rounds, the damage was getting more and more ugly. One eye was closed, with the other swelling up steadily. Yet since Pacquiao couldn’t knock him out, the fight kept going, although all suspense had been drained out.
It got so bad that, by the 11th round, even Pacquiao tried to signal referee Laurence Cole that the fight should stop. But it kept going until the end, although Pacquiao seemed to let up in the final two rounds. By then, he could afford to, since the fight outcome was not in doubt.
While Pacquiao got new acclaim as the world’s best fighter, his opponent got taken to the hospital. The pictures have told the tale, showing how decisive Margarito’s loss was – as if the lopsided scorecards didn’t do so already.
Margarito’s future is already in doubt after the loss alone. This was only his second fight since being suspended for a year for cheating, and he did little to prove that he still belonged in super fights. Many fans didn’t want him in this fight anyway, since they are still starving for a Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather bout.
The destruction to Antonio Margarito’s face can hopefully be fixed over time, but fixing his career could be another matter. Assuming he does not retire, he will have a hard time getting another big fight against a champion opponent. His name recognition and previous stardom got him into this fight, yet they may not benefit him next time around.
Even though almost everyone gets destroyed by Pacquiao these days, the way that Margarito and his face got destroyed was particularly damaging. After he recovers from tomorrow’s surgery, he will have to figure out if that is his last act in boxing – or his last meaningful one.
