LEWISTON Ida – My daughter and I went to Applebees yesterday – a day ahead of the free meals for Veterans promotion – and tried a couple of the items on the Veterans menu. In case you haven’t heard Appelbees (along with a host of other restaurant chains) is offering free food to active Veterans and active duty and service personnel. The free meal choices at Applebees are: 7 oz House Sirloin Steak, Chicken Tenders, Bacon Cheeseburger, Double Crunch shrimp, Three-Cheese Chicken Penne, Fiesta Lime Chicken, and the Oriental Chicken Salad.
I had the 7 oz House Sirloin Steak while my daughter went with the Oriental chicken Salad. We had arrived directly at noon and the restaurant was crowded yet our meals arrived in a timely manner. My steak was cooked to perfection (medium rare), and the broccoli side was tender and tasty. I always order fries (never have liked baked potato) and the seasoning on the “patriot fires” was a perfect match for the steak.
My daughter is a fairly typical young woman – always “watching her weight” (skinny as a rail) – and so after consuming about half of the Oriental Chicken Salad, she declared it “scrumptious” and asked for a carton so she could save the rest for dinner.
If you know an active duty military man or woman or a Veteran, make sure they know they can have a meal on the house at Applebees, along with Chili’s, Hooters (with the purchase of a drink), Krispy Kreme (free doughnut at select locations), Subway (Veterans receive a free 6-inch sub sandwich at select Subways) and T.G.I. Friday’s (Veterans are eligible for a free entree when they buy another at full price).
