There was never a time when mankind did not face problems. In fact, earlier generations faced life & death situations of a worse kind with much less defenses, but managed to survive. Even recently, during the height of the cold war era, many in Europe thought they would, most likely, perish in a nuclear holocaust. Happily, such times are behind us; no more big powers threatening to annihilate each other and, by extension, the whole world, with the nuclear arsenal at their command! They show maturity and even cooperate with each other as the enemies are now moving targets, without borders!
The crucial changeover is the weapons of mass destructions are accessible by many. And with the innate human nature for good and the evil, the real danger is these weapons increasingly finding their way into unintended hands. Also, technology is easily accessible through the net; again, that can be used for the good and evil. While progress is in geometrical proportion, the destruction also likewise! Unless the governments, whatever be the issues that divide them, accept this reality, we face real danger of getting caught napping in the face of catastrophic, man-made dangers, lurking everywhere. Our problems will get out of hand before we wake-up to them.
We tend to drop our guard and get lost on irritants, generally blaming others than work our way out of the rut. It becomes self-defeating, as ideology and domestic politics cloud clear thinking. None can back-out or even dare compromise, as it will be construed as weakness! Our leaders are chasing mirages to solve crucial issues, get bogged down in political gridlocks, and while those that need immediate attention, get sidelined. We have terrorism issues out of the blue due to lack of focus and unity among the big powers. The agenda is set by the evil, while the governments lack the focus to tackle them. Soon these life & death issues get out of hand, with the man in the street bearing the full brunt of the impact.
Even seemingly intractable issues arising from globalization, free trade, currency valuations etc., can be solved on give & take, based on facts in a logical manner. These are only initial teething problems, as the whole world is in tight embrace, getting more dependent on each other by the day! Ideologies are in the back-burner, as we are in a new dawn of sharing and caring. But of course, the sentiments are also lost due to key players, accusing each other of stealth games to undermine each other to gain unfair advantage.
Do we need to get lost when facts stare at us? Like in personal lives, unity is strength among countries. The knots get disentangled when one sees the problems from the others’ point of view. It is self-defeating to prosper by creating misery to your neighbor or trade partner; the fall-outs for such a myopic view will bring disaster to even those who benefit in the short-term; to prove a pyrrhic victory in the end!
It is time the major powers worked towards no-holds-barred cooperation in areas that benefit humanity. The man in the street will understand that trade-offs are necessary as it is not a one way street to prosperity. The benefits to be reaped extend beyond mere trade, globalization, and currency valuation. The major spin-offs to such cooperation will be sending clear signals to the enemies of mankind; those who exploit the loopholes to create anarchy and even target the innocents to achieve their ends. The benefits of scale, by each country concentrating on its strengths than reinventing the wheel each time, will extend to the far corners of the world. Most of the issues are man-made, just to score points and even led by domestic politics. The man in the street wants to be left alone and will lend his full support to any effort, so that the outstanding problems do not get out of hand. The issues are eminently solvable, as we have arrived so far in time, surmounting bigger issues when communication was not easy like now, which led to more misunderstandings & suspicion. The world leaders are meeting once too often nowadays; so why our problems need to get out of hand? It is all in our minds! Where there is a will, there is a way!!
