The idea of psychic pets make some people chuckle. But some scientists aren’t laughing. They are starting to substantiate the many claims of pet owners who say that their animals are indeed psychic.
We’ve all heard stories of family pets which have trekked hundreds of miles over unfamiliar territory in order to find their way to their masters. How animals are able to accomplish such amazing journeys is under debate.
But those in the scientific community are beginning to weigh in on the claims. Biologist Rupert Sheldrake, author of Dogs That Know When Their Owner is Coming Home believes that animals have perceptive abilities of telepathy and premonitions. Veterinarian Dr. Allan Schoen says in his book, Kindred Spirits, that people and animals are intimately connected. He says our pets understand our needs, read our moods, and sometimes even communicate with us on a level that transcends words or body language.
One of the most thoroughly documented cases of an animal journeying to find its family is a story of a black and white cat named Sugar. ESP researcher Dr. J.B. Rhine became interested in Sugar’s journey and gathered data concerning the cat’s extraordinary odyssey.
Sugar was owned by the Woods family, who lived in California. The Woods eventually moved to a farm in Oklahoma and left Sugar behind with some neighbors. It’s important to note that Sugar had a slight hip deformity which could be felt when he was petted.
About 14 months later, Sugar showed up at the Woods’ farm in Oklahoma, nearly 1,500 miles away, at a place he’d never been before. At first the Woods didn’t believe it was their cat. It was not until Mrs. Woods found the telltale protruding hipbone that they realized the cat was undeniably Sugar. The Woods contacted their former California neighbors who explained that Sugar disappeared three weeks after the Woods finally left for Oklahoma.
Another popular story is about a Manhattan family who bought a summer house 100 miles away from the city.
The family had a cat at their summer retreat which became pregnant. On the day the family was scheduled to return to the city, the cat was nowhere to be found. Reluctantly, the family returned to the city without her.
About two months later, the cat showed up at the family’s Manhattan apartment with one of her kittens in her mouth. Apparently, mother and kitten had traveled 100 miles to the heart of Manhattan.
The family was ecstatic but before long the mother cat was gone again. She turned up two weeks later with another one of her kittens. Finally, the family put her in the car and drove back to the summer house to get the rest of the litter.
Scientists maintain that living things have invisible vibrations surrounding them which give shape to life forms, and affect their behavior. Physician Dr. Larry Dossey, says there is a connection between all species, which is not limited by locality. He refers to it as a “non-local mind.” Consciousness is not restricted to the brain or the body or time or place.
Therefore, people and animals can have an effect on each other, and be connected, even when miles apart. This is certainly true in regards to the emotional bond between pets and people. Perhaps, science has only begun to scratch the surface of this amazing relationship.
