Speeding is one of the most common reasons for UK motorists being pulled over and fined by police officers. In a bid to avoid penalty points and an on-the-spot fine, some motorists have decided to invest in a speed camera detector to help keep their speed within the legal range while they are driving. But are speed camera detectors legal in the UK?
Speed Camera Detectors Are Currently Legal
According to SpeedCamerasUK.com, speed camera detectors are legal in the UK, whether they are fixed or mobile devices. In addition, legislation that was put in place on 27 January 1998 made the detection of speed cameras lawful. However, the Government is reviewing the use of speed camera detectors within the UK. The Road Safety Bill is seeking to ban speed camera detectors.
Road Safety Bill 2004 note 2: Speeding
The Department for Transport Road Safety Bill of 2004 defends the use of speed cameras to detect speeding in motorists. It goes on to state, “The Government believes that devices which interfere with or detect the proper functioning of such cameras have only one purpose: to tell drivers when they can break speed limits and get away with it. This is unacceptable. It prevents the police from carrying out their duties, and is a danger to other law-abiding road users. The Government will not be prohibiting those devices that rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to warn drivers of published camera sites or posted speed limits, as these compliment the Government’s policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to drivers, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads.”
Maintain a Safe Speed
Even though speed camera detectors are currently legal in the UK, motorists should not abuse them, but should continue to drive within the safe, posted speed limit. There are various forms of speed camera detector devices in the UK. Speed camera detectors can make use of Radar detection, Laser detection and GPS, or a combination of one or all of these devices. SpeedCamerasUK.com states that the legality of radar and laser detection systems are under review, as these types of speed camera detection can allow motorists to drive above the posted speed limit where there are no speed cameras and avoid prosecution for breaking the law.
Speed camera detectors are legal in the UK. However, if you do make use of these devices, do not abuse the system. Continue to drive within the safe posted speed limit at all times while driving.
