There’s no doubting the huge popularity and success of the Halo series.
Ever since the science fiction video game franchise was created by Bungie and owned and published by Microsoft Game Studios for the original Xbox console, it has spawned numerous sequels and more.
What Is Halo?
So, what exactly is Halo all about? Here’s how it’s described.
“The main trilogy of games center on the experiences of the Master Chief, a cybernetically-enhanced human super-soldier, and his artificial intelligence (AI) companion, Cortana. The Master Chief aids future humanity in battling the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien races that worship an ancient civilization known as the Forerunners, and a parasitic organism known as the Flood.”
What does “Halo” actually mean? The term refers to Halo megastructures in the science fiction universe.
So, just how popular is the franchise? Since the success of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 3 sold more than $170 million worth of copies in just the first day of its release. That actually beat the record held by Halo 2 prior to that.
Not Just a Video Game
The Halo franchise extends across the video game market with other adaptations.
The list Halo media goes on and on, but some of them include music, books and comic book series, and anime.
How About a Film?
With the success of Halo as not just a video game but even a cultural influence, making a movie based on Halo seems like a no-brainer, but will it happen?
There’s been talk about making a Halo movie for years now. Still, a film hasn’t been made, so what’s taking so long?
Back in 2005, a script for a film adaptation was actually written and a movie planned to be released in 2008. What happened? Well, production of the movie stopped and in 2007, the project was declared dead.
Still, the film is planned on being made at sometime. In fact, just this year, Frank O’Conner from Microsoft said that the Halo movie will eventually happen.
“We’re going to make a movie when the time is right,” he said. “We own the IP. If we want to make a movie, the scale of all the other stuff that we do changes dramatically. We make tens and tens of millions of dollars on ancillary stuff, toys, apparel, music and publishing. If we do a movie all of that will grow exponentially. We have some numbers if we do a movie, but it changes everything. It also changes our target and age demographic.”
So, Halo fans will have to wait some more to see what happens.
