Have you ever been in an ugly argument with another person? The scripture gives us both the diagnosis and cure for this common problem.
The diagnosis is in James 4: “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Do they not come from your desires that battle within you? You want something, but don’t get it!” In a word, the reason we have strife with others is because of selfishness. This is the scriptural diagnosis of the disease behind the symptoms of arguments, gossip, division, hurtful words, and actions.
Thanks be to God that Jesus gives a prescription for this disease. His medicine is commonly called the golden rule. “In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you” (Mt. 7:12). If we would swallow this loving pill, then the tension of broken relationships would quickly ease, at least as far as we were concerned.
Let us take this simple, powerful, treatment together. Next time you are tempted to raise your voice with selfish malice, ask yourself what you would think if someone did that to you.
