Dwayne Douglas Johnson otherwise known as “The Rock” has made a seamless transition from college football to professional wrestling in the 1990’s. At the turn of the century, “The Rock” has made another successful transition to the big screen.
Along the way, the talented and charismatic former athlete has been able to put together a solid resume of film credits as the main character in numerous films.
Johnson has accepted a variety of roles since his movie career took off in 2002 with the Scorpion King movies.
After nearly a decade, he is still in high demand and will be featured in several films in the coming weeks and months.
One of his movie projects is “Faster “which is a action-heavy movie -slated for a 2010 fall release– that derives around vengeance. His character is called “Driver” who is determined to make the criminals pay for the death of his brother.
Another movie scheduled for the summer of 2011 will be the fifth installation of the “Fast and Furious” franchise.
In the spring of 2010, “The Rock” was reported to feature in a Simon West film. The tentative title for this 2012 film is called “Protection”.
The following is my Top 5 movies that star “The Rock”:
1. The Rundown: This was a 2003 film that the Rock had a leading role, but had a solid ensemble cast that featured Christopher Walken as the villain and Seann WIlliam Scott. The Rock’s character is a bounty hunter who must travel to Brazil and return his employer’s son back to the United States.
2.The Scorpion King: This film was released in 2002 and was the film that made Dwayne Johnson a film star. The Scorpion King had a lot action and fight scenes, and had some comedic moments as well. The Scorpion KIng was a prequel to a film called The Mummy.
Another reason it solidified The Rock’s ” success was how well the movie did at the box office. The film earned over $165 million, but only had a budget of just $60 million.
3. Walking Tall: I am old enough to remember seeing reruns of the original film Walking Tall and the remake does provide a different take and fresh perspective, but Dwayne Johnson as the new sheriff was very convincing. This 2004 version also starred Johnny Knoxville.
The film did well by amassing over $57 million worldwide. The cost of the film was an estimated $46 million
4. Gridiron Gang: This 2006 film was very inspirational and told a story that I believe many people can relate to in some fashion. The movie is about second chances and Dwayne Johnson did a good job portraying a coach trying to help kids make better decisions.
5. Race to Witch Mountain: This was one of Dwayne Johnson’s more recent efforts, and it was produced by Disney. This film was targeted mainly toward a younger audience, and was a remake of the 1975 film entitled “Escape to Witch Mountain”. I liked the science fiction aspects, and Johnson did a solid job in his leading role.
