Your dolls don’t have everything they need but do they have everything they want? What female doesn’t want jewelry? It’s much easier than you think to make necklaces, bracelets and other accessories for most any doll. In fact, things you already have in your craft box can often be used to make jewelry for a doll.
With a few small pieces of stretchy cord you can make all sorts of necklaces and bracelets. String the beads onto the cord to make the design you want. Of course, if you’re making jewelry for a Barbie doll you’ll need much smaller beads than for a larger doll. Tie a knot in the cord when the beads are all in place. Trim the excess cord then position the knot so that it slides inside one of the beads. The tiniest dot of glue, inserted into the bead with a toothpick, can help conceal the knot for good. Use this technique to make bracelets and short necklaces. If you’re making long necklaces it’s not necessary to use cord that stretches.
A narrow rectangle of felt or other material can easily be turned into a choker-style necklace for your doll. The fabric needs to be some that won’t unravel. Cut a strip long enough to go around the doll’s neck with a little to spare. Glue a tiny piece of Velcro to the ends to use as a closure. Or, glue on very narrow ribbon pieces and tie the choker onto the doll. Create the design you want by attaching a fake jewel to the center of the choker. Other choices for embellishments are buttons, tiny beads, sequin or even a painted wooden shape.
Braid three pieces of yarn or cord to make a different type or choker. At the ends, put a little bit of white glue, then twist the ends together and allow them to dry. Bring the braid around the doll’s neck and trim to size, allowing a little excess to affix a closure. Glue a tiny piece of Velcro on to secure. Now choose the embellishment you want to mount to the front of the necklace. A similar piece can be made as a bracelet.
If you have some really small shank buttons you can make yet another necklace and bracelet set. Simply string them on a piece of stretch cord and tie the ends in a knot. This necklace looks good only as a choker and not a long necklace. Now that your doll has all these new jewelry pieces she’ll be even more glamorous than she already was!
