Brownstoner reported today that the proposed Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District is beginning to “make some very concrete progress” with a target of July 2011 to be up and running.
This recent progress includes unanimous votes of support from subcommittees of both Community Board 6 and community Board 6 within the last week or so.
The Atlantic BID would cover all storefronts facing Atlantic Avenue from 4th street to the BQE as well as 1 block north and south on all side streets (except for a small portion that is already included in the Court-Livingston-Schemerhorn BID).
This would of course cover all the Cobble Hill merchants on Atlantic, even though the majority of the BID would fall in Boerum Hill.
The Atlantic Ave BID would have a budget of $240,000 a year to “tackle marketing, sanitation, streetscape, traffic, and crime advocacy.”
Reader responses so far seem largely to be in favor of the BID, with a small minority expressing concern about racial and economic discrimination “forcing” long time businesses and residents out of the area.
