November always bring around thought and talk about elections. All that is heard for months prior to this time is negative ad campaigns and it can be difficult for the average voter in Austin to know exactly what is really happening during the elections. There are many ad campaigns on television and it is no surprise that each side prefers the smear campaigns to simply sticking to their own issues. The following are some of the hottest topics for this campaign season:
• The budget is a huge issue with voters and just recently it was found that the original amount that Texas was in arrears was twenty one billion. The fact is that this deficit is actually much higher than estimated but nobody wants to give any other number that can be relied upon. No matter this amount, the bottom line is that many in the Austin area who rely on state services know that there may be a crunch coming. It is time to tighten the belt and know that the help that many are used to may not be forthcoming this year.
• On the local level, while all the rest of the state, include Travis County is in a mess, it seems as though some political parties are not being upfront about the campaign monies that are being collected. The King Street Patriots have also been accused of using strong arm tactics on minority voters and other groups. Their records have been seized and it should be known soon the extent of the discrepancies.
• The good news in the local political front is that Travis County has had the best early voter turnout than anywhere else in the state. While other counties are seeing huge drop offs at the polls, Travis Count is leading the state. The only problem is that there is still a slight drop in voting from just two years ago but that in fairness was a presidential election which usually yields more voters. With the main election still to come, it may be interesting to see just how many do actually make it to vote by the deadline.
No matter your party affiliation or what you want to vote for. It seems that there are many different issues that may not even have anything to do with actual elections but that are making their marks during this campaign season. The person who takes their own opinions and who does not listen to all the hype can find out where they stand and just vote their conscience. AustinChronicle.com Political News
