From July to October 2010, there were over 50 reports of auto theft and auto break-ins occurring in the Potrero Hill neighborhood according to CrimeMapping.com. During the same five month period of time, there was a serious sexual assault reported at the 100 block of Dakota St. In addition, there was a stabbing incident during a robbery at the 2200 block of 18th St.
Auto theft and auto break-ins are seen as a rite of passage for residents living in San Francisco. However, violent criminal acts are much less frequent in Potrero Hill. Many residents had goosebumps over the past five months while the manhunt and subsequent arrest of accused rapist Damir Shalako was occurring.
If you would like to get more involved in assault and sex violence prevention and education, SF Women Against Rape (SF WAR) offers a variety of workshops through their website. In addition to an interactive presentation addressing assault, they also provide education on topics such as how, “various forms of oppression intersect to create and sustain a ‘rape culture.'”
