There are times when we seem to want to do late night snacking even after we have finished dinner. This may become a nightly ritual for some people, which in the long run can lead to some health risks. There are other factors that contribute to late night snacks such as TV commercials or being around too much food. Usually these are enough to make us want to start munching. While these factors may be hard to control, you can reduce their negative effects by formulating a plan and opting for healthier snacks instead.
One tip to avoid craving for late night snacks is to consume more water. This should be done especially after you have eaten dinner. Dinner should be your last meal for the day, but sometimes you still find yourself feeling “hungry”. In reality, you may be confusing your hunger pangs with mere thirst.
A good thing to eat when late night snacking is fruit. Although generally speaking, you should avoid any snacks at night, eating fruits is a healthy alternative, if you ever feel hungry in the middle of the night. Try eating a few grapes or a tiny can of pineapples. Fresh bananas are great, and so are apples. No matter what your choice is, fruit is always a good option.
Always brush your teeth before bed time. There are people who say that the minty taste of their toothpaste or the idea of having to brush their teeth again is what prevents them from eating late at night.
A good idea would be to remove all junk food in the house to keep you from snacking at night. Remove high calorie snacks like ice cream and potato chips and replace them with more healthy food like oatmeal, fiber rich cereals or even some carrot sticks.
Rather than late night snacks, try drinking herbal tea instead. Warm herbal tea is many times better than sugary or high fat foods.
Try having smaller, but more often meals during the day. Stick to foods that will make you feel fuller. Stay away from processed foods or those that are laden with sugar. For instance, if you have late night chocolate cravings, grab a piece of dark chocolate, which is a lot healthier than milk chocolate.
You can also put together some almonds, cereal, raisins, and yogurt to get over those late night food cravings. You can also try some low fat popcorn, but make sure to skip the butter. This is a great light snack while surfing on the internet or watching TV.
If you feel the urge to do late night snacking, you can take your mind off it by working on a puzzle, doing a hobby or craft, and walking around. Do not focus your attention on ads shown on TV. You can try to mute the TV during commercials or just turn it off.
Finally, you can try to discipline yourself and resist all urges for late night snacks. If the food cravings become too strong, just will yourself to sleep. The next morning you will find that your stomach has gotten flatter and that you are more excited for breakfast. Don’t let your late night food cravings get in the way of achieving a healthier, leaner body.
