Awkward family photos are a way of life, and always will be. Yet awkward family photos aren’t usually shared beyond the household, since they are rather embarrassing. But nowadays, being made to look foolish can be just as popular as being polished and professional – if not more so. The best place to prove that is the Internet, which thrives on showing off people at their worst or least accomplished. Therefore, a site about awkward family photos has become the newest Internet phenomenon in time for the holidays.
The website first went up in April 2009, by friends Mike Bender and Doug Chernack. Naturally, they were inspired by their own silly family pictures, which almost every household has. With that in mind, they figured out that they would make a promising Internet collection.
As such, Awkward Family Photos has become a major Internet destination, getting 15 million hits a month. Yesterday, some of the weirdest pictures included a family dressed in Hawaiian shirts and a dad holding up a hammer while his son was blowing out his birthday cake.
The site is about to get even bigger, since it is the holiday season. If December is defined by anything, it is by oddball family gatherings and photos. As such, the website and Sprint have joined forces so people can put their loved ones in a few weird holiday portraits.
Individuals share their most uneasy moments on the Internet daily, particularly on YouTube. These days, it is a badge of honor to look foolish online, as it is a way to get 15 minutes of online fame. Now, their loved ones can get into the mix as well, with their awkward family photos.
But it can be a relief as well, as some households are torn apart in trying to get the right picture. Of course, given the stress of the holidays, it doesn’t take much for tempers and frustrations to flare. Yet instead of freaking out over looking foolish, they can share their efforts with the world, and get people to laugh with them.
Taking awkward family photos may still not be desirable, as some families might still want to look their best. However, not everyone can succeed, especially this time of year. For those who can’t quite do it – or stumble until they do – they can still salvage something from their efforts.
Some of the most awkward family pictures have even gotten into book form, as Bender and Chernack published a book of the craziest photos – which might serve as a good Christmas gift itself.
