Neighbors and visitors alike will do a double-take when they notice the new planter you’ve made! At first glance, it’s a pair of jeans that are standing by themselves. Upon further inspection those jeans are actually a flower pot! The standing pants are an unusual way to add a little color and whimsy to a deck, garden or even a living room.
A baby’s jeans are perfect for making the unique planter. Although nearly any size of small jeans will work a toddler’s pants are ideal. They can be designed in many different ways. They can have a zipper or none; they can be stretchy or not. However, the best jeans to use are ones that are not flare-legs or boot-cut jeans. Jeans that go straight down on the legs are perfect.
Use starch to stiffen the denim. Follow package directions to mix dry starch or purchase it in a liquid form. Read the instructions for starching any fabric and follow those. As the starch dries shape the pants as if a child were wearing the jeans.
It can be helpful to use things that will keep the shape of the standing pants. You’ll use two-liter soda bottles to stand the jeans so these work well for shaping, too. Simply place the bottles, or partial bottles, into the legs. Wadded up, plastic bags work well for shaping the rear of the pants.
Fill 2 two-liter bottles partially full with rice, beans, small rocks or similar things. It’s important to put the same amount in each bottle. All you need is enough to weight the bottles down so that the standing pants aren’t easy to tip over or knock down. Set one bottle into each leg of the pants. Position it so that the hems of the pant legs come all the way down and conceal the bottles.
Now decide how much extra you need to finish filling the legs. Cut a section from two more two-liter bottles to accomplish that. Set these bottle pieces so that the cut side faces downwards, and covers up the tops of the first set of bottles. If you want, remove all the bottles and tape these cut bottles on top of the whole bottles.
After filling the legs of the pants, and with the waist and rear of the pants shaped, all you have to do is place flowers, plants and other greenery inside the pants. Allow some viney types to spill out and over the sides of the jeans. Arrange as many as you want but use only artificial flowers. If you want, position a piece of Styrofoam inside the pants to secure the flowers. Also, a helpful touch is to add a little hot glue around the bottles before sliding them in the pants. This will keep you from having to carry the planter by holding your hands under both pant legs.
The unusual jean planter is a beautiful addition to a garden or a cute décor piece inside the house. It looks great in a little girl’s room or just standing on the front porch. Make a family of jean planters by using several different sizes and standing them in close proximity of one another. It’s an adorable project that you’ll really enjoy!
