Babylon 5 was the name of the TV show that aired in the 1990’s and it was also the name of the station that was home to some of the major races. It was also the place where diplomacy and peace was often the major point in some of the stuff that was going on throughout the whole five seasons that it was on. In the whole five seasons, the major characters did their best to keep the peace until they could not anymore. The major characters were as follows: Commander Jeffrey Sinclair, Captain John Sheridan, Ambassador Delenn, Ambassador G’Kar, Ambassador Mollari, Chief of Security Michael Garibaldi, Chief Medical Officer Stephen Franklin, and Susan Ivanova.
1. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair/Valen
Sinclair was the first to command the Babylon 5 station and would be later known as Valen when he traveled one thousand years in the past. Sinclair would be seen as a regular during the first season of the show but after that he would only guest star several times in key points of the series. Jeffrey Sinclair was the one that the Minbari chose to be the commander of the station even though he was not the one next in line. He had very little recollection of the time just before the war ended between Earth and the Minbari. He would find out later that the Minbari race had discovered something very interesting and unusual in him. Sinclair was a tough but understanding Commander of the station but when pushed; he could be an enemy. He was also good friends with Michael Garibaldi, who was his chief of security, Stephen Franklin, who was Chief Medical Officer, and Ambassador Delenn. He was instrumental in saving the people who had supposedly died on Babylon 4 when the station disappeared. He would become Ambassador to Minbar at the end of the first season, but fans would not know this until the opening of the second season. He also became head of the Rangers and would receive a letter from the far distant past in order to help him make the decision to become the legendary Minbari, Valen. Sinclair traveled one thousand years into the past, became Valen, and helped the Minbari defeat the Shadows of that time. Jeffrey Sinclair was played by Michael O’Hare.
2. Captain John Sheridan/President of Interstellar Alliance
Captain John Sheridan became the next commander of Babylon 5, but this time he was not chosen by the Minbari, but by Earth itself. The Minbari were not happy with Sinclair’s replacement because they blamed Sheridan for the death of their leader. Sheridan was a strong minded, stubborn, stern leader but was a kind and warm man to his family and to those who he considered his friends. He had been married in the past, but she had died and he was still grieving over her loss. It would not be until much later that he would come to terms with her death and fall in love again. John Sheridan was instrumental in getting many of the races that lived and worked on the station to see things his way; whether they liked it or not. He was the main one with the help of several others who made the decision to fight the Shadows when they appeared. He was one of the main ones who helped oust President Clark, even though that ended in death, and help rid the galaxy of the Shadows. There was a cost to himself though. He was told by several people not to leave to travel to the home planet of the Shadows, but he did and that is where he died. He was able to survive with the help of a being named Lorien, who was only able to extend his life for twenty years, and end the fight with the Shadows. He also had begun a friendship with Delenn, which would later turn into a romance and then marriage. Sheridan would become President of the Interstellar Alliance and in the last season, be seen moving to Minbar, where it would be home for the next twenty years. He had many adventures during those twenty years, which included the birth of his son, David, saving David from the enemy, and becoming leader of the Rangers. At the end of those twenty years; he gathered his friends around him to tell them good bye, bade farewell to Delenn, and then left the planet to die in space. He met up with Lorien and they disappeared into the vastness of the unknown, never to be seen again.
3. Ambassador Delenn
Ambassador Delenn was a major force on her home planet of Minbar as she was a member of the Grey Council and an Ambassador to Babylon 5. She was also a member of the Religious caste and a force to be reckoned with. It was Delenn who had made the famous decision to make war with the humans after the death of their leader. The war was long and costly, deaths on both side. It was not until they came upon a ship ready to ram them, that they discovered that souls of their race were being born inside humans. So the Minbari surrendered but did not let anyone know why they did so. This did not sit well with the Warrior caste and would not be something easily forgotten. She would become Ambassador to Babylon 5, in which she could watch and learn from the humans. She would slowly become friends with Sinclair and he would many times save her life when it was in danger. Towards the end of the first season, Delenn began to believe that she had a destiny to fulfill and so she made the decision to change herself in order to become a Minbari-Human hybrid. In the second season, we see what happens to her as she transforms herself. Many Minbari did not like her transformation and she eventually lost her seat on the Grey Council.
As time went on, she developed feelings for John Sheridan, and he her. Together she and Sheridan would be a force reckoned with when it came to the Shadow War. Together they managed to fight and win any battles sent their way. She was the major one, along with Sinclair and Sheridan, in sending the Babylon 4 station back in time in order to fight the Shadows. She was devastated to learn of his supposed death at the Shadow’s home planet, but determined to carry on. She was happy when Sheridan came back alive but did not like the fact that he would only live another twenty years. She was thrilled when Sheridan proposed to her and gladly accepted. She came across problems in her marrying Sheridan when her clan protested but she found a clue that changed their mind. To her dismay, there were other problems plaguing her; in the form of a civil war on her home planet. It took some doing, but she saved the day and was able to bring the Grey Council back. She was also instrumental in forming the Interstellar Alliance so when Sheridan left Earthforce, he would be able to become President. Delenn and Sheridan would later marry and both would be head of the Interstellar Alliance. It took a year but they both finally settled on Minbar where they would spend the next twenty years. At the end of the twenty years, she had a child, she had become President of the Interstellar Alliance, and was facing the loss of her husband. She was heartbroken when it came to say goodbye to him but she was able manage it. Until her death, she would remember her husband by sitting outside watching the sun come up.
4. Chief of Security Michael Garibaldi/Head of Covert Intelligence/Chairman of the Board of Edgar Industries
Michael Garibaldi was a man who knew the streets and knew what to do to get what he needed in order to do his job. He was also his own worst enemy. He was a man who lived a hard life and also was a hard drinker. With Jeffrey Sinclair by his side, he would become Chief of Security for Babylon 5. He was the kind of man who was suspicious of everyone and anything. If he knew something was up or wrong, he would be there to get his man. He never let up and never gave up. He had many trials to overcome in the years that he served on the station but nothing rattled him until he came up against the Psi Corp and what they did to him when he disappeared into a Shadow vessel. He lost everything after that and try as he might, could not make it back. So he basically gave up and let life take over. It was not until after he saved Sheridan did he make up for everything that he lost. He would become Head of Covert Intelligence in the Interstellar Alliance and for a time, he did very well. That is, until he tried to kill Bester, the one who had changed him, and discovered he had no control over his life. He hit rock bottom but he managed to get out from under it all. With the love of his life by his side, he managed to overcome his problems and become the man that he should be. He became Chairman of the Board of Edgar Industries and for the next twenty years, ran it well. He also had the family that he also yearned for and was able to get his revenge on Bester. He would say his final farewell to Sheridan when it came time to say good bye and go on with his life.
5. Chief Medical Officer Stephen Franklin/Head of Xenobiological Research
Stephen Franklin was the chief medical officer of Babylon 5 and would later become Head of Xenobiological Research. He did his best to save all the lives on the station and would often be the one that many would come to ask for his thoughts. Franklin would do many things besides being a doctor and would as a result be the one that was able to do things when others could not. He was the one who told Sheridan his time was near when the twenty years was up.
6. Susan Ivanova/Commander/First Officer of Babylon 5/General/Ranger One
Susan Ivanova was a force to be reckoned with and someone who one did not cross. She was a fighter and knew what to do in order to survive. She was First Officer to both Sinclair and Sheridan and ran a tight ship. She was close to Talia Winters until her betrayal and was close to her fellow colleagues. She had a close friendship with Marcus Cole who saved her life in deference to his in the War with the Shadows. After the fourth season, she was promoted and took position on a new kind of warship and left Babylon 5. Twenty years would pass and she had became a General, a position she was becoming dissatisfied with. When she went to say goodbye to Sheridan, she took the offer that was offered to her. She became the next leader of the Rangers and lived the remainder of her life on Minbar.
7. Ambassador Londo Mollari/Emperor Mollari
Ambassador Mollari was the ambassador to Babylon 5 and later would become the reluctant Emperor to his people. He would be the main instigator in the start of the Shadow War by aligning himself with them and bringing down the Narn race. He was not a well liked man and many hated him. He basically did what he wanted and did not care what others thought. He did try to redeem himself at one point when he distanced himself from the Shadow, but in the end it would come back to bite him in the butt. He would become Emperor, but as a result, he would end up being forced to do things against his will by the Drakh race. He would die by the hands his once great enemy and friend.
8. Ambassador G’Kar
Ambassador G’Kar was someone who relished in his position but in the end, left everything he ever knew in order to leave his past behind. He was once a great enemy to Mollari and later a friend. He would be revered by his people at which it drove him nuts. He knew how to get things done and could be a fierce ally or enemy. In the end he would do as Mollari asked of him and kill him. As a result, they both died at each other’s hands.
The other minor characters in the series were:
Vir Cotto, who was Mollari’s assistant and later Emperor after Mollari’s death.
Lyta Alexander, former Psi Corps and rogue telepath
Zach Allan, Chief of Security after Garibaldi resigned.
Marcus Cole – Ranger
Lennier – assistant to Delenn and later a Ranger
