If you like to provide your holiday party guests with a variety of tasty hors d’ oeuvres but don’t have a lot of serving dishes, you may want to consider using a bread bowl.
A bread bowl is a great way to save on serving dishes and make a unique, no-waste presentation of a savory dip or spread.
There are many different round types of bread to choose from as well as different dips and spreads that would go well within them.
What follows is a recipe for a savory bacon and cheese spread that is easily served in a homemade bread bowl.
In order to make “Bacon and Cheese Filled Bread Spread” you will need to assemble together the following ingredients;
• 16 ounce round loaf of bread, preferable Rye or Pumpernickel
• 12 slices crispy, cooked bacon
• 8 ounces shredded Monterey Jack and Colby cheese
• 1 clove minced garlic
• 1 small red onion, chopped fine
• 1 cup mayo
• 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is preheating slice off the top of the round bread and begin to use your fingers to remove the bread’s center. Be sure that when you are done there is a 1 inch thick bread shell. You do not want to remove too much otherwise the spread will ooze out of the bread bowl.
Next in a large mixing bowl mix combine the shredded cheese, bacon, garlic, mayo, Parmesan cheese and onion. Once the ingredients are well combined, scoop the mixture out of the mixing bowl and place it into the bread bowl.
After the bread bowl has been filled with spread place the lid back onto the bread bowl. Wrap the entire thing in tin foil and place it onto a cookie sheet. Place the bread laden cookie sheet into the oven and let it cook for 1 hour.
Once the spread filled bread bowl has finished cooking, remove it from the oven. Carefully remove the foil and serve it on a festive platter with assorted crackers. You may even want to dress up the platter by adding a layer of fresh greens, vegetable sticks and fruits.
