Can ya smell the fresh breeze? It’s faint, distant and sweet.
Newsweek magazine becomes nothing more than a journal of leftist thought and goes from 80 or 90 pages, down to a rag of 30, if that. The New York Times has gone from the paper of record to the paper of complete irrelevance.
American broadcast media, both traditional and cable, that adhere to the tired old way of journalism schools pumping out leftists to parrot their wishes to the masses, are failing miserably when compared to media that does not play to that bias.
Talk radio is totally controlled by purveyors of more conservative opinion, and it thrives, yet progressive radio, Air America specifically, fails in the business model of ‘for profit’ broadcasting. The only, dare I say ‘successful’ leftist radio is government sponsored NPR.
And now that bastion of leftist media positioning, the BBC, comes out and unabashedly admit they were left biased. The current director general of the BBC, Mark Thompson, “In the BBC I joined 30 years ago, there was, in much of current affairs, in terms of people’s personal politics, which were quite vocal, a massive bias to the left.” Well, well, well!
That would rather clearly explain why so many American progressives always swore the BBC was the ‘go to’ source of news of the US. Odd considering the left bias of MSNBC and many, many others is rather blatant, but since the BBC was the model for American media, I guess it is just leading the way in admitting their bias.
But to me the more telling aspect is one of history as well as using history to make predictions for the future.
Europe led the way in social democracy, and they are running from that position, or they are collapsing. The BBC admits they were basically carrying the water for their government’s positions.
Now look to this side of the pond and what do we see? Massive citizen backlash against progressive government and against this president who swore he was a centrist. And that clear and marked shift away from progressive governance is stark and abrupt. Any takers that American media goes the way of the BBC or dies a slow death on the vine?
See how they are tied? Media and government are ugly bedfellows considering the concept of the duties and responsibilities of the Fourth Estate. The entire purpose of media is to keep government honest and inform the public fairly, accurately, contextually and most of all, dead honestly. When media and government parrot the same line people notice and revolt.
This ugly marriage of leftism and journalism will always fail so long as people have options for the truth. Only in totalitarian states and the attendant clamping down on opposition media do leftist states have any chance of employing media as their own Tass and Pravda. Since media is generically left biased, as the journalism schools are almost all leftist bastions, the scenario does not really apply with conservatism. Media is generically opposed to conservative thought, so but for totalitarianism of some sort the right cannot seize media but by force, and we don’t do that in this nation.
So as the BBC goes so too will American media, or they will find them selves shuttered. Not because conservative government will act against them or any such, but because people in the industrialized world are throwing off the yoke of Marxist/Socialist thought and rather soundly too boot.
If American media had any sense they would moderate their tone, but they won’t – at least not now. Like ardent progressives they will go down with the ship, still maintaining to the end that they are right and only a less than intelligent soul would disagree. For now expect a great deal more of the same as we’ve had for the last 15 years or so.
