Trends are just that – trends. Like fads, they come and go. Next summer, there will be a brand new trend to keep up with and you won’t be able to wear all the things you bought for this summer’s trend.
Trends are expensive. If you buy the must-haves for the season, you are constantly buying new clothes, which are constantly going out of style. Chances are, you are shopping for quantity over quality. Every woman has purchased at least one item that was worn only once before it was ruined in the wash or lost the hem. Instead of buying cheap trendy clothes, make an investment in high quality clothes that are classic and can be worn again next year.
Trends are not timeless. Not only are you wasting your money on wearing items for one season only, but also you will look dated in pictures 10 years from now. It’s true that fashion is ever changing, but it’s wise to focus on timeless pieces that are well-tailored and high quality for the core of your wardrobe.
Following fashion trends will make you look like everyone else in the world. Express your own individuality by switching things up. Shop for outfits that you have not seen on every manikin in the mall.
Men think women look silly at the beginnings stages of fads. Men have their own trends that they follow blindly, but they are subtler. Men tend not to appreciate the newest trends on women until they see them so often that they get used to the new idea and forget the old trends. For example, some men thought skinny jeans made women’s body shape look odd and out of proportion. Now, men love the look and expect to see girls wearing these jeans. However, if women started wearing wide leg jeans again, men would think they look weird until they began to see this fashion trend on more and more women.
Trends are not for everyone’s body type. Not everyone is built to look good in skinny jeans. Focus on what shapes and colors look good on you as an individual, not what looks good on the rest of the world.
Unfortunately, you look like a copycat if someone around you has just worn something similar. I would rather be the one who wears unique outfits that everyone wants to borrow, instead of the girl that is told, “I have the same top in black.”
Fashion trends also cover hair and make-up. If you’re following trends, you already wear the same type of clothes as everyone else; do you really want the same hair poof and smoky eye too?
By not following fads in the world of fashion, you will consequentially feel better about yourself and your individuality. Self-esteem is important, more important than having the most popular type of skirt or shoes.
There are more important issues to follow than fashion trends. We could focus our time, energy and money on programs to help make a difference in the world, instead of the world of fashion.
