Whether running is your favorite way to exercise or you’re brand new to pounding the pavement, you will probably find yourself on a treadmill eventually. Treadmills are great when it’s snowing, sleeting or just too cold or hot to run. Treadmill running can offer you privacy, convenience and a running routine that is unique for your style and needs. But, unfortunately, treadmills also come with the added bonus of nowhere to go and nothing to see: boredom.
Treadmills and Monotony
Maybe your treadmill is the property of the local gym, hotel or other place where you pay to run, but more than likely it is in your own home. It’s a good purchase to make, but one you realize that there’s no wind, no neighbors, no trees and no vehicles to dodge, you may find yourself wondering just why your pounding away and going nowhere. The benefits of a regular running routine are many, but if you start to lose your motivation, the temptation to get off the moving rubber floor and onto the couch may be to much.
Tips to Keep You Focused:
Use Your Machine to the Fullest: If you’re on a machine with all the bells and whistles than be sure to use them to the fullest. Don’t be afraid to set your treadmill up to simulate sprints, hills and other training needs for a more effective workout.
Get off the Machine: Running on a treadmill isn’t interesting, and if your fake hills with increased inclines aren’t enough to keep you interested then get off for a minute. Don’t be afraid to hit the floor for some pushups, jumping jacks or other easy exercises. If you’re at the gym, there are other machines, weights and mats, so use them to your benefit. If running is your man concern then take just enough time to put in some other elements and kick the boredom without wearing yourself out too much to continue your run.
Make a Call: Bluetooth tech might not be appealing when you see the guy in the store tapped into his phone and annoying all those around him, but when you’re at home, and on an easy run, then don’t be afraid to make a call. As long as you’re not out of breath then you can pull this one off, but it you’re sucking wind then it’s time for another option.
Put on Some Music: Almost everyone has some form of an MP3 player even if its just a cell phone. Their reasonable priced for simple needs and picking the right type of music will let you push yourself harder maybe even make the wall look likes not always in the way.
Watching the Boob Tube: This one is a bit tougher. You can go with the T.V. as it will distract you, but be sure that you keep an eye on your overall effort as it’s easy to get wrapped up in the visual stimulation and forget about pushing yourself.
If you looking to get the most out of your workout than you will need to keep focused. You need to think about the fact that you can’t get off the treadmill just like you can’t instantly be back at your house when you’re out running during more suitable times. Building the discipline to stay on a treadmill when you want to get off can be hard, so try to make your run more fun, interesting and challenging. Whatever you need to do to keep consitant and make your run interesting will pay off in the long run. Do whatever it takes to keep the boredom at bay and keep on running.
