When City of Heroes came out it was pretty cool but lets face it every ones favorite superheros are either Marvel or DC. So playing City of Heroes was like being in a third party comic. Sure there are some good third party publishers but nobodies favorite superhero comes from a third party publisher. The good news is now after years of people thinking about it we now can have a superhero game with every ones favorite superheros in DC Universe Online.
The reality is that DC Universe Online is going to be just like City of Heroes. You will not get to play as your favorite DC heroes but you will get to interact with them. There will be plenty of jobs to do similar to City of Heroes. Fortunately being newer the game has better graphics then City of Heroes. Even from beta testing you can tell that the game is newer and better in terms of graphics.
While you will not be able to be your favorite hero you do get to interact with them. You can also interact with your favorite villain if you are so inclined. You also get to play in the same locations that you get to see in the comics. You get to choose Metropolis or Gotham City as your base. Most likely later expansions will let you go to other locations in the DC universe. Besides these cities you are also going to be able to go to Arkham Asylum and the JLA Watchtower depending on if you are a hero or villain. There are also many popular cities besides your base city which you can travel to such as Atlantis, and Coast City. Metropolis seems to be the most developed area so far.
The game was supposed to be released this month but has been postponed. This is not the first time but hopefully will be the last time the game gets postponed. Now the game will not be released until 2011. Until then those of us who are lucky enough to be beta testing can get a sneak peek.
If beta testing is any indication the game will have great graphics and sound. Overall the game is similar to City of Heroes but based in the DC universe which DC fans will enjoy. Marvel fans will be jealous that they do not get to play in their own world. The game is going to be a fee based game I suspect that many people will switch from City of Heroes to DC Universe Online once the game is finally released.
I think that the game may get boring after awhile especially if you played City of Heroes and got tired of that. I think if the game keeps updating and adding content it will help. What they need to do is have the game like the comics and continue to have engaging story lines. Already the game has a story line about Brianac having taken over the world in the future and Luthor using something to make regular people super which explains why so many new heroes and villains will now exist.
I think that it will be worth getting DC Universe Online and playing for a month or two and see if they can keep me entertained after that. Being a fan of the DC universe will make this game better. Fans of City of Heroes will also likely want to switch over when DC Universe Online is released.
