You may think, No Way! But would I ever mislead you? I am a certified foodie, a picky and persnickety nutrition snob. This is a perfect snack. I have used certain varieties of baby food over the years. I have tasted most of them through two children, because I have always been picky about what they ate. I have made my own baby food. Now some just are not as good as others and after tasting a few, I completely understood why my babes turned their little noses up at them and refused to eat them. (Their noses look and behave just like mine).
However, this little jewel is a perfect diabetic snack. The great thing about baby food is that there are no additives. This particular one is Beech-Nut Home-style Stage 3 Squash and Zucchini. All it has in it is butternut squash, zucchini and water. No additives, no chemicals, no salt. In this one little six ounce jar which only has 60 calories; you get 2 grams of protein, 210 mg of potassium, 4 grams of fiber. None of the carb grams (13g) come from sugar. You also get 15% RDA of Protein, 45% RDA of Vitamin A, 10% RDA of Vitamin C, 2% RDA of Calcium and 4% RDA of Iron. It packs a punch. The potassium content alone is worth the 60 calories.
I know all about Gerber Baby Foods, and have used them. But they are more watered down, it seems to me. This one is a little chunky.
You can refrigerate these and eat them after a meal as you would a pudding. It has a slightly sweet taste. I never salt it~~to me it doesn’t need it, but you could always add a little sprinkling of sea salt and mix it in.
I pack these with me wherever I go. They go with me as does a plastic spoon. They are the perfect little sized portion to take with you on the go, and then toss. I can eat this while the non-diabetics in my family feast on French fries or an ice cream or cookie. I have eaten these at times when I felt like I was starving to death between meals and was about to cave into something my body did not need. This squash mixture usually makes my hunger subside.
Heat it up and it eats just like a little serving of soup. Now, many baby foods have carbs added into them in the way of noodles. This one does not. For portability and an instant veggie snack you do not have to chop, steam, bake, etc., these are instant and instantly good and good for you.
