Can you cut a circle? If so, you can make a nice poncho to wear in the spring, winter or fall. You certainly don’t have to be an expert seamstress to make a poncho. The hardest thing about it is finding something to use as a pattern. It’s necessary to cut a perfect circle to make a poncho and that means you’ll need a pattern. Rather than purchase an expensive pattern simply use something you already have around the house.
If you happen to have a round kitchen or dining table you’ve got a poncho pattern! If the table is too large, or too small, there are some steps you can take to make the poncho more suitable in size. To make a poncho the same size as the table, just drape the fabric over the table and cut the material to the shape of the circular table.
To make a poncho larger or smaller, drape the fabric over the table, then use a piece of chalk to mark around the edge of the table. Now you can cut this circle much larger, or a little smaller, depending upon the size you need.
Lay the cloth out flat on a surface and use chalk or a marker to create a different pattern. Tie a string around the chalk then make a dot somewhere in the center of the fabric. Hold the end of the string on the dot while drawing on the fabric. This method gives you a perfect circle of any size you want. To decide how long to make the string measure from the side of your neck down to your wrist.
If you don’t have a round table you can use an intertube or other round object as the pattern. No matter what you use for the pattern cut a second hole in the center of the big circle to make an opening for the head.
To sew the poncho start by either hemming the lower edge or stitching on narrow lace, fringe or ruffles. When you stitch on edging it’s not necessary to hem the poncho. Stitch around the neckline as well and the poncho is done.
Make a different version by cutting straight up the center of the poncho. Hem both cut edges then add a tie or other closure around the neck. Two pieces of ribbon, one sewn to each top corner of the poncho front, works well to make a quick tie.
Ponchos can be made from many different types of fabric making it easy to create a few to coordinate with many different outfits. It’s an easy sewing project that’s perfect for beginners or fun for someone more advanced.
