Got a t-shirt with a torn sleeve? Somehow ended up with two t-shirts of the same color? If you’ve got a t-shirt at home that you just don’t wear anymore, and you’re a beginner to sewing, you can easily turn that shirt into a cute skirt for a little girl. You’ll only need to know one kind of stitch – a straight stitch – and it’ll only take a few minutes to change the shirt. When the skirt is finished there are many different things you can do to make it look different from all the other skirts you end up making.
Lay the chosen shirt out on a flat surface and cut straight across it, from one side to the other, just below the sleeves. Use a yardstick to make sure you cut the shirt perfectly straight. Wrap the bottom half of the shirt around the waist of the person you’re making the skirt for to see if you need to trim some off. Since the hem of the shirt will be the hem for the skirt you’ll cut the excess off the already-cut side. Another way to decide how long to make the skirt is to measure the girl, from the waist to the area on the legs where you want the finished skirt to reach. No matter which method you use to decide on the length, remember to leave a couple of extra inches at the top so you can create a waistband.
Fold the cut area of the shirt over an inch, then once again. Do this all the way around the waist pinning it in place as you go along. Now you’re ready to begin sewing. Find the side of the shirt (some t-shirts have no side seam so get as close as you can) and begin sewing around the waistband with a straight, long stitch. Really small stitches won’t allow the waist to stretch like it needs to when worn.
After you get almost back to the place where you started, stop and take the skirt out from under the presser foot, leaving a small, unsewn gap where you can insert the elastic. Use a piece of ¾” elastic and cut it to be the exact size around the little girl’s waist. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and use this pin to guide the elastic through the opening and into the waistband. Make sure you don’t pull the elastic all the way through; there should be a couple of inches left hanging out of the opening. When you get the elastic through the waistband, remove the pin, then bring the two ends of the elastic together and stitch across them. Make sure the elastic is not twisted before you sew across the ends. Trim the ends really close to where you stitched them then slide the stitched ends up into the waistband. Stitch closed the small opening you left for inserting the elastic.
You’ll love making the easy t-shirt skirts so much that you’ll need a way to make each one look different. Stitch on an applique, cut interesting shapes (like a heart or triangle) and sew them on as pockets, use a different color of thread, with a zig-zag stitch, to sew around the existing hem or just add a ruffle of lace around the hemline. It’s easy to make the skirts and you’ll end up making many just for the fun of it!
