Chinese Restaurants are a staple in most communities these days. While a few chains offer food that is OK the best always seem to be the smaller, privately owned restaurants. Berwick, Pa is no exception. I picked the next three restaurants as being the best in the Berwick area for Chinese based on the quality of the food, price, friendliness of staff, and variety of offerings.
The first, and my favorite, Chinese restaurant in the Berwick, Pa area is the Golden Garden. Primarily take out, this restaurant is located at 45 Briar Creek Plaza and one door down from the Giant Super Market. Time it right and you can order your food, do your grocery shopping, and pick up your food on the way out. They will also deliver with a $10 minimum order. The staff here is always friendly and smiles a lot. If you order a lunch special you get a free can of soda. My favorite meal would be C11, roast pork lo mein combination plate. It comes with an egg roll and pork fried rice for $6.45. There is enough that my daughter and I share this and still have plenty left over for the following day for lunch. Prices range from $1.15 up to $11.95 with the cheapest options being over lunch. Another nice thing about this restaurant is that they offer diet plates.
The second option, although technically not in the town of Berwick, is the China Queen. It’s located at 2131 Columbia Boulevard just a few miles south of Berwick on Route 11. The portions here are HUGE! We always end up taking some home with us. I love the hot Chinese tea they offer and order it with every meal. The egg rolls are also especially good here. The outside is always crisp and never greasy. We always think it’s a nice touch that the food is brought out on a separate dish with a lid which helps keep the food hot until you are ready for more. It’s also great if you are sharing since the bowls of food can be placed in the middle of the table and you aren’t picking off someones plate. China Queen does not accept credit cards so make sure you have enough cash.
Lastly is J.C.’s at 124 West Front Street. J.C’s offers lunch specials from 11a.m.-3p.m. and prices range from $4.99-$5.59. You have your choice of pork fried rice or white rice with your meal. The beef with garlic sauce is especially good although too hot for some people. The dinner combinations run from $6.90-$7.45 with the same side options as lunch. The Wonton soup is another favorite and at only $2.95 per quart it’s a great deal. While J.C’s is my least favorite of the three it is still better than most in this area.
An honorable mention would go out to King’s located in the Kmart Plaza on Route 11. King’s is a buffet and boasts some of the nicest waitresses in the area. It’s better at supper time with more selections. The kids love that they have hand dipped ice cream for dessert which they are allowed to scoop out themselves. The only reason this didn’t make the top three was because it’s a buffet and I was focusing more on meals you can order.
