When studying diet and weight loss there is one ingredient that is in every diet I have ever heard of – water. Now everything must be done in moderation, and water is no exception.
I have seen people faint because they drank too much water (she was drinking way too much water). So make sure to consult your doctor before changing your diet. But generally speaking, here are the many benefits to drinking about 80 ounces of water a day.
Your Stomach is Only So Big
This is also the theory behind weight loss surgery, where they make the stomach smaller.
The fact is, your stomach is only so big. So if you drink a glass of water before eating, you can only eat so much. It is basic biology.
When I am being very good on my diet I will drink those little fiber or protein drank mixes that are about 5-30 calories. They come in about 15 different flavors and varieties now. I love the Special K Strawberry Kiwi flavor myself.
It is a few extra calories, but protein and fiber (paired with a tasty drink) will make you feel fuller longer. Especially if you drank it right before a meal.
Water Helps With Digestion
Water helps you digest the food you’ve eaten and can lead to overall health. Many (if not all) of your organs require water to work efficiently.
If your organs are working well, it is much easier to diet and lose weight.
Thirst Can Be Mistaken for Hunger
This statement is a playground for late night talk show hosts, but it is true. It is very easy to mistake hunger with thirst. That is why, if you are always drinking water, you will be less likely to think you are hungry.
Lack of Water Can Make You Tired
Having a good source of natural energy is a great way to lose weight. Lack of water can make you tired, which is not very beneficial to a good diet.
If You Don’t Drink Enough Water You Can Get A Headache
9 times out of 10 when friends visit Denver, CO from out of town they get a headache right away. It is not our 300 days of sunshine, or our clear air that is causing the issues. They forget to drank water. In our high altitude, we simply need more water to stay focused. I don’t think they ever believe me, but it seems most headaches can be cured with water.
If you have a headache it is much harder to lose weight. Many foods we love so dear (like sugar) give us a nice rush that make us feel better. Naturally, the body wants to feel better, and will thus crave sugar. Eating sugar just makes you more dehydrated, and it becomes a vicious cycle.
