Ever have a time when you desperately wish your little one would be quiet? (Yes, this is a rhetorical question.)The iPod Touch has numerous applications that can make that dream into a reality! The challenge is in finding appropriate applications for the youngest of users. Read on to discover the best apps for your 2 to 3 year old.
Toddler Teasers is a category rather than a specific game as there are a number of versions. Highly recommended versions include Sorting and Whatchamacallit. The object of the Sorting teaser is to differentiate between two items, such as the letter p and the letter q by sorting them into two different buckets. The game focuses on the main confusions that children often have in differentiating. Whatchamacallit is a vocabulary building teaser. Several images of things are shown within a category and the child is told aloud which one they are supposed to select from the group. For example, if the category is vehicles, then there could be an image of a car, a scooter, a four-wheeler, and a van. The game says “Touch the Van” and the child is supposed to select that item from the group. All Toddler Teasers have “stickers” to choose from and a “page” to stick them on. This works as a wonderful incentive for the child to keep working and feel proud of their accomplishments.
My first Tangrams
This application opens up the world of tangrams to the tinniest of youngsters who have limited concentration and abilities. Included in the game are over 15 different tangrams to practice, which span varying levels of difficulties. The game provides the shapes to choose from in one section of the screen and the image that they are pursuing in another section. It is a simple matter of dragging and dropping the appropriate shape into the matching location. The tangram images themselves are quite cute.
This application is a mastery of creativity! Every step and detail of making a cake is included in this game. The child selects a recipe, such as carrot cake, and receives a screen listing the ingredients needed and their amounts. Images of each ingredient are pictured along with a large mixing bowl. The child drags and drops each ingredient into the bowl. The amazing detail comes in when the child has to tap the egg in order for it to crack, rotate the iPod in order to pour something, and shake the iPod for the salt to come out! The game continues with mixing the batter, selecting the structure of the cake, baking it, decorating it, and finally eating the cake. It is fun and interesting for the child and unlikely that they will produce the same cake twice because the choices are so great!
Animals Matching for kids
This is a classic matching game for kids. It includes three different levels of difficulty from which to choose depending on your child’s ability. The easiest level has approximately ten cards and is likely to be suitable for most 2 to 3 year olds. As they become acquainted with the game, they may be able to move up to a more difficult level which has many more cards. The characters on the cards remain constant through the varying levels. Also, the placement of the characters changes with each new start of the game to ensure the child is not just memorizing the locations but actually understanding the concept of matching.
The number of applications being added to the iTunes store is ever increasing, but these are classic applications that will likely stand the test of time. They will remain within the category of best applications for 2 to 3 year olds for the foreseeable future.
