My husband, an Italian food junkie, found this quaint restaurant. Italian Garden (500 N. Custer, McKinney) would be easy to miss. The restaurant is north on Custer road between Highways 121 and 380, nestled in a Home Depot strip mall. Ah but what a find! Italian Garden is one of those neighborhood restaurants you hope opens near you. It lives up to its motto “Home cooking from our family to yours.” Chef and owner Benny Polisi opened Italian Garden in spring 2010 and this restaurant is a winner.
What ambiance it lacks from the outside, the restaurant makes up for with its interior. A mural by McKinney artist Tom Anderson stretches the entire length of the restaurant transporting you to the Italian countryside. The staff is energetic and friendly. And the food….the food is wonderful, freshly made Italian comfort food. Did I mention the homemade garlic rolls?
Want something lighter? Italian Garden offers an assortment of pizzas and hot sandwiches. The restaurant does not serve wine, but you can bring your own bottle and your server will be happy to uncork it for you. I actually prefer bringing my own wine – not only is it less expensive but it allows me to enjoy a favorite wine without being constrained by a limited wine by-the-glass selection.
Italian Garden is open 11 am – 10 pm Monday through Saturday. Check out the restaurant’s menu on their website. Reservations can be made at (972) 540-9333.
