I am self-confessed coward about scary movies. I don’t watch them. I was pretty careful about what I let my children watch, knowing that they were easily frightened. Looking for some non-scary Halloween movies? Here are some you’re sure to enjoy.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966) From Peanuts comic strip creator Charles Schultz and Peanuts movie maker Bill Melendez comes the classic Peanuts tale. Linus firmly believes in The Great Pumpkin. Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Peppermint Patty, Schroder, Sally and friends each react differently to Linus as he waits in the pumpkin patch. Just like in real life, if you march to your own drum, some people mock you, some people humor you, some people follow and some people ignore you. Will the Great Pumpkin finally visit Linus?
Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) Mortimer Brewster (Cary Grant) a determined bachelor and anti-marriage advocate gets married, but before setting off on his whirlwind honeymoon, he brings his new bride (Priscilla Lane) to meet his spinster aunt Abby and Martha and his batty cousin who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt. These genteel old ladies have a surprise for Mortimer and it’s not just tea and cake. Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha proudly announce that they have poisoning lonely old men, not for money, but as an act of mercy. When Mortimer’s creepy brother Jonathon (Raymond Massey) and his friend Dr. Einstein (Peter Lorre) show up with a body of their own, it becomes a comedy of errors. Children will love this movie.
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) and Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953) I laughed till I cried over these silly, spook spoofs. Poor Abbott and Costello, no matter where they go monsters follow.
A-Haunting We Will Go (Laurel and Hardy) (1942) A side-splittingly funny monster mash up with the world’s most famous duo of Blockheads, Laurel and Hardy. Here are the boys in A-Haunting We Will Go on Youtube. And here is Laurel and Hardy Ghosts on Youtube.
