Doing brunch is not just for Sundays. The best pancake and waffle houses in the United States are typically packed on Sundays for the brunch crowd, but any day is a good day for brunch.
Of the many breakfast restaurant chains and independently-owned breakfast restaurants in the United States, three stand out as the best for pancakes, waffles or French Toast.
For waffles, nothing compares to the pecan waffles with maple syrup and butter served for those who can get a table at the Breakfast Club on Tybee Island near Savannah, Georgia.
For pancakes, I love the buttermilk kind. Even though there is nothing fancy about the Village Inn restaurant chain, they do make the best buttermilk pancakes. And they will add plump, real blueberries for the best blueberry pancakes.
First Watch, a breakfast chain that is only open for breakfast and lunch, makes excellent French Toast.
Here’s why these three establishments are the top brunch spots if you are craving, waffles, French toast or pancakes:
Best pancakes in America:
The Village Inn has restaurants throughout the United States. The Village Inn is known for their excellent pies such as French Silk, fruit pies, cream pies and carrot cake. They also serve traditional Southern grits and other Southern favorites such as biscuits and gravy.
Many of the Village Inn breakfast omelets and skillets are served with three buttermilk pancakes. Served piping hot, the butter melts all over the pancakes which can be smothered in syrup. They have a blueberry topping which is a little too sweet. I recommend asking for the real blueberries inside the pancakes rather than the blueberry topping. During a recent visit to a Village Inn in Florida, my son ordered the Village Inn Ultimate Skillet with diced potatoes, ham, two pieces of sausage and two pieces of bacon. He ordered his eggs poached. He could not finish the skillet but had no problem finishing the pancakes that melt in your mouth.
Best waffles in America:
The Breakfast Club on Tybee Island in Georgia is the perfect place for Sunday brunch. They have incredible pecan waffles that are unlike any you can imagine. It’s like pecan pie for breakfast, only better. Located at 1500 Butler Street on Tybee Island in Georgia, the Breakfast Club is so popular people wait in line to get in every day of the week, not just for Sunday brunch. If you are traveling to Savannah, make sure to take a detour to Tybee Island for brunch at the Breakfast Club.
Best French Toast in America:
The best French Toast in the United States can be found at First Watch, which has restaurants in Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.
The First Watch Floridian French Toast is made with sourdough bread with wheat germ, powdered cinnamon sugar and topped with bananas, kiwi and berries. They also serve a regular French Toast. You can choose sourdough or rains bread. It’s prepared in a batter of cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar, eggs and cream, and then topped with butter and powdered cinnamon sugar.
Eating pancakes, waffles or French Toast for brunch, is like having your dessert at the start of the day. Nothing can compare to fluffy pancakes, exotic French Toast or pecan waffles, except maybe a chilled mimosa!
