Chelokababi (www.chelokababi.com) is a fine Persian dinning experience on 1236 Wolfe Road here in the Bay Area since 1979. I had the pleasure of trying the spinach filo, a pastry filled with spinach and feta cheese served with tarragon yogurt blend dip. For entree, I tried the koobideh chicken, which is barbecued marinated chicken served with jasmine rice. The chicken was cooked to perfection with a house blend of spices served with a mint spicy sauce. Their menu has kabob items, soups, salads and appetizers for vegetarians starting at $5.50, and kabob combos starting at $14.95. Their specialties are the baghali polo, soltani, which are fluffy rice with fork-tender lamb shanks and joojeh kabob, which is grilled chicken filet served with rice or salad. The service here is friendly and the atmosphere is pleasantly Middle Eastern with a Mediterranean flare.
Incidentally, a “chelo kabab” or “koobideh” refers to the charbroiled skewered strip of meat (beef, lamb or chicken), a popular preparation in Middle Eastern Persian Cuisine. My kabob tour continued at the Persian Afghan Kabob on 604 Mary Avenue, where I tried their chicken kabob for $12.95. They only open for dinner on the weekends so these were their dinner prices and quantities. The kabob is spicy marinated chicken cubes served with rice and flatbread. This is the spiciest of the three Persian restaurants on my tour, and the service here is also friendly.
My final stop was at the House of Kabob on 161 Sunnyvale Ave (http://www.sunnyvalehouseofkabobs.com/) where I had the Number 8 “Chelo-Chicken Koobideh” for $6.95 which is the skewer of juicy ground chicken mixed with special Persian seasoning served with jasmine rice. All three kabob houses are excellent, the meat preparation is tender, juicy, and well-seasoned. The basmati jasmine rice is a nice aromatic addition to the meal. The service in all three restaurants was friendly, and very beautiful exotic décor kept me enchanted through the whole meal. When you are in Sunnyvale, and in want of great grilled spicy middle eastern meal, stop by one of these restaurants for a great dining experience!
