So you’ve struggled all of your life to grow your biracial or African American hair long and nothing seems to work. You’ve tried all the latest products and expensive salons and you still can seem to grow your hair past your shoulders. I understand the frustration associated with trying to grow long hair and never achieving the goal.
After changing my hair routine and still experiencing breakage, I realized that it wasn’t my routine that was detrimental to my hair but it was my body not receiving the proper nutrients to make healthy hair growth possible. I learned that there are a few supplements that you can take to ensure that your hair reaches its maximum growth potential which will increase both the length and health of your hair.
The first and best supplement to take for long healthy hair is msm (methylsulfonylmehtane). This substance is a form of organic sulfur often found in vegetable and fruits. Sulfur acts in the body to help cells become more permeable which allows them to take in more nutrients. Sulfur also acts to determine the curl pattern of your hair, in part, because disulfide bonds (sulfur atoms linking to one another), cause the hair to become curled. If you have a lot of disulfide bonds, then your hair would be curlier than someone who had less. There’s a great article that explains this in more detail at Cornell Center for Materials Research entitled “How do Relaxers on Your Hair Work?” Check out ccmr.cornell.edu for more information.
Taking msm allows more sulfur into your body which in turn allows more nutrients into your cells. This allows for a lengthened hair growth cycle and therefore longer hair. Incidentally, msm also has the ability to change your curl pattern to less curly. I wouldn’t advise taking this supplement if you like your curl pattern because it can make your hair straighter. Msm also has the ability to cause headaches when you first start taking it so drink a lot of water to avoid any side effects.
The next best supplement to take to achieve long healthy hair is biotin. Biotin is a B vitamin that helps with your metabolism. It also has the ability to thicken your hair which makes your hair stronger and less prone to breakage. Biotin can be found in foods like eggs, especially the yolk, and brewer’s yeast. Taking a biotin supplement in addition to eating these foods will allow you to see a change in your hair quicker.
The last supplement to take for long beautiful hair is a multivitamin. The best multivitamin to take is one that contains inositol, folic acid, and vitamin C. These vitamins and minerals work together to give your hair the building blocks it needs to grow in the very best condition possible.
In taking a multivitamin along with msm and biotin daily, you will see rapid and pleasing results in your hair growth and well as the health of your hair. To have healthy hair, it doesn’t just determine what you put on your hair but what you put into your body. Good luck with growing your long, healthy and beautiful hair!
