I love watching a really good trailer to a video game. The best ones tell a great story, have great action or emotion, and are on par with Hollywood movies or Pixar short films. The following are my list of the top ten video game trailers from 2010.
10) Marvel vs Capcom 3 “Tron Bonne Reveal” Trailer
The Marvel vs Capcom trailers are all about appealing to fanboys. The first Marvel vs Capcom 3 trailer (YouTube Link) was exciting with the announcement of so many key characters for the game. However, the “Tron Bonne” reveal trailer was more exciting trailer as numerous heroes and villains come together to do battle in an exciting action sequence.
9) Dragon Age: Origins 2 “Destiny” Trailer
Gametrailers Link (Extended Trailer)
The Dragon Age: Origins “Sacred Ashes” trailer (YouTube Link) was my favorite trailer in 2009. It provided high paced action and introduction to characters, at the quality of the Lord of the Rings movies. The Dragon Age: Origins 2 trailer is still a good production, but with only 2 combatants it didn’t have quite the same energy as the 2009 trailer.
8) Bioshock Infinite
Similar to the Gears of War 3 trailer, it’s not the most exciting trailer on this list. However, it does an excellent job of teasing the new world you’ll get to explore in Bioshock Infinite. At the very beginning, it teases you to a return to the underwater city of Rapture, but it ends up that’s not the case at all.
7) DMC (Devil May Cry)
The reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise was brought to life in this relatively simple, yet exciting trailer. It gives hints to a possible new background story to Dante and gives hints to how there will be new gameplay elements in the future. The music also fits the energy in this trailer really well and is quite a contrast to the typical suspenseful-sounding music of trailers.
6) Star Wars the Force Unleashed II “Betrayal” Trailer
Let’s face it, light sabers and big Jedi fights will always win a crowd over. This trailer does hint at some story background for the game, but this trailer is more about the great action.
5) Batman: Arkham City “Huge Strange Reveal” Trailer
This trailer is classic Batman. Hiding in the shadows, sneaking up on people, and subsequently kicking ass. It’s good enough you could have believed some scenes were from an actual Batman movie.
4) Star Wars the Old Republic “Hope” Trailer
This one ranks a bit above the Force Unleashed trailer as it features a bit more a story background and a few more characters and villains (although they are all nameless). Star Wars the Old Republic put out an excellent trailer (YouTube Link) last year as well, but this year’s surpassed it.
3) Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
The Assassin’s Creed team has a way of making great trailers, and the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood trailer was no different. Just like the Assassin’s Creed 2 trailer (YouTube Link), there are little hints of what the game will have in store, while putting together an exciting sequence. What I love about this trailer is how calm and cool Ezio is during the entire piece.
2) Deus Ex: Human Revolution
I have to admit, I had little no knowledge of the Deus Ex series before this trailer. This trailer got me interested really quick. It plays just like a Hollywood movie trailer, giving you a taste of the futuristic environment and story background. Maybe it’s just me, but the music and the style of the trailer really reminded me of the Matrix. The TGS trailer for Deus Ex (YouTube Link) was also great, but I give the E3 trailer a few bonus points for delving a bit more into the universe of Deus Ex.
1) DC Universe Online “Who Do You Trust” Trailer
Admittedly, this trailer is all fanboy service, showcasing most of the DC Comic Universe’s greatest heroes and villains. However, the fight between all the characters is exciting and filled with action. The trailer also gives an insight into the backstory for the DC Universe Online game.
Gears of War 3 “Ashes to Ashes” Trailer
Compared to a number of the other trailers on this list, this is more of a solemn piece. It strongly suggests that this game and the story are the end for the Gears of War trilogy.
Starcraft 2 “Ghosts of the Past” Trailer
Another great trailer from Blizzard that plays just like a good Hollywood movie trailer. It gives you insight to the story that will be told in Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty. However, it doesn’t get onto the top ten because it reuses some elements from other trailers that were previously released.
Metal Gear Solid: Rising
The Metal Gear Solid: Rising trailer isn’t the most exciting, in that it doesn’t show you much of the story or the characters for the game. However, it possesses a certain charm with their theme of “cut”, as they show how the game will allow you to cut virtually anything with your blade.
Knights Contract is an upcoming action RPG from Namco Bandai. They released a surprisingly high quality trailer featuring a fight between a knight, mage, and some ghouls/zombies. Not knowing anything about this game before watching it, it has a cool “surprise” near the end revealing something about the main character and the game story.
Ni No Kuni PS3 Announcement Trailer
To me, most technical demo trailers are boring. They attempt to try to show off their graphical prowess, which begins to get tiring. In this trailer, the folks at Level 5 don’t necessarily try to show off their technical prowess, but rather how their technical prowess makes the game feel just like a Studio Ghibli animated film. It’s a different feeling in this trailer, and easily the coolest demo-like trailer I saw this year.
