Southern California is one of those few places in the winter where freezing temperatures are not keeping us indoors. Orange County is a hub where a plethora of kid’s activities can be found. Its family friendly amusement is endless. There is definitely not a shortage of fun to be had and there are choices of activities for every budget. Here are a few of our family’s favorites.
1. Ice Skating at the Irvine Spectrum Centeris loads of fun. The location is superb for kids and is located right near the Giant Ferris Wheel which is a must see as well. The seasonal skating rink offers skating lessons for those who are not feeling as confident on the ice. The prices are at a reasonable $12 for each session and $4.50 for skate rentals. They also offer helmets at no charge which definitely makes the parents feel more at ease.
2. Annual Holiday Boat Parades in Newport Beach and Dana Pointin December are a beautiful way to spend an evening with your family. A tradition in Orange County, the participants in these boat parades take pride in and work all year to put together a spectacular show. A night out at a local restaurant along the parade route is a great way to ensure a perfect seat for the show. Most restaurants in the harbor areas take reservations in advance for the boat parade nights.
3. The Sawdust Festival themed Winter Fantasy in Laguna Beach is a place you can stay for the day and not run out of fun things to enjoy. The sparkling winter wonderland offers live entertainment featuring community performances and Carolers dressed in full costume. They host one of a kind crafts and gifts made by local and talented artisans such as glass blowing that you can see right in front of your eyes. The cost is $6 per adult and $3 for children but those 5 years old and younger are free of charge. There are low cost art projects for the younger kids. Be sure to try the funnel cake, it is unbelievably scrumptious.
4. Disneyland is incredible during the winter and although the prices can be high starting at $68 per child for a one day park ticket and $78 for ages 10 and older, the crowds are considerably lower. The decorations are spectacular during this time of the year and it just seems extra magical. There are Dickens’s Carolers singing Christmas songs every night and they also have a special fireworks show during this time of year. In December there is a special show with choirs from all over with a full orchestra who perform two shows each night.
While in some places winter is a time for nesting, in Orange County we prefer to get out and enjoy the many activities that are available.
