The one thing that is awesome about “Big Bang Theory” is their choice of guest stars. While “Big Bang Theory” is a mainstream sitcom, almost all of their guest stars pander to a geeky audience, and Eliza Dushku was just wonderful as an F.B.I. agent this week in “The Apology Insufficiency.” This episode had something else that is rarely seen – the smallest glimpse into Sheldon’s human side.
“The Apology Insufficiency” had Howard up for a government job that required a background check, which was performed by F.B.I. Special Agent Page, played by Eliza Dushku. Raj can only talk to women with alcohol in his system, so he was a hot mess, and Leonard decided to practice flirting with her during the investigation. However, it was Sheldon and his big mouth that ruined things for Howard when he accidentally blurted out that Howard once wrecked the Mars rover trying to show off for a girl. Sheldon also tried to hide that he did this from his friends, but the guilt started getting to him. After trying alcohol and trying to retract his statement, Sheldon tries apologizing to Howard but is surprised that Howard won’t instantly forgive him.
F.B.I. Special Agent Page against Sheldon was pretty fun to see. It’s always fun to see anyone go against Sheldon, but for the most part, Page kept her cool. Even though she vocally expressed an annoyance with Sheldon, she never showed it, proving to be a worthy contemporary.
This was the first episode of “Big Bang Theory” to air with Kaley Cuoco after she broke her leg, and they hid her behind a bar with everything in her reach. Sheldon comes to Penny to drown his sorrows, which only proves to drive Penny to drinking. The chemistry between Penny and Sheldon always leads to some of the show’s better moments, and even though their interactions were limited this week, it was still fun to see.
Sheldon’s one human moment showed that his friends are truly important to him. Sheldon wanted Howard’s forgiveness, so he gave Howard the one thing that was most important to him – his spot.
Overall, “The Apology Insufficiency” is one of the better episodes. This season really seems to be bringing out the human side of Sheldon, but this episode really will make you go, “Aww, how sweet!” Eliza Dushku also proved to be a great guest star and it was great to see the return of Penny, no matter how limited.
