Last spring my husband and I spent four nights in a cottage in Blue Ridge, Georgia. We were disappointed in the cottage and didn’t think we would want to visit Blue Ridge again. However, we did love the scenery, the fishing was good and the shopping and restaurants were extremely enjoyable. We decided to give Blue Ridge, GA another chance, or actually give another cabin a chance. This time I used Black Bear Cabin Rentals in Blue Ridge, Georgia.
I found their website by searching for pet friendly cabin rentals in Blue Ridge, Georgia. They have many pet friendly cabins to choose from. Some are on the Toccoa River, others on mountain streams, ponds or private lakes. They have cabins that can sleep 2 people or up to 8 people. I chose the 1 bedroom cabin called “Misty River” on the Toccoa River. The River was a few quick steps from the cabin’s door.
When I made the reservations a few months ago, I had a conversation with a very nice woman at the rental office and she explained their procedures to me. When I booked the cabin I had to pay the cost of one night’s stay to hold the cabin. The balance would be charged to my credit card on the day of check-in. They e-mailed a rental agreement, which I signed and faxed back to them. We were all set until the day of check-in.
We arrived at Black Bear Cabin Rentals, checked in and were given directions to the cabin, which was a 25 minute ride from the office. Their rentals are spread out all over the area, so we had no idea where it would be, except on the river.
Most of the ride to the cabin was on good, paved roads. When we turned off of a two lane road onto a gravel road it got a little hairy. Luckily, we didn’t run into someone coming from the opposite direction. The road was very narrow, very winding and very hilly. The last turn was onto an even worse road for one more mile. It was just wide enough for our SUV and the bumps were awful. Considering we were in and out of there 3 or 4 times a day, it took a toll on us each time!
‘Misty River’ is a very large one bedroom cabin. There was a queen size bed, desk, night tables, bookcase, display cabinet, a large rocker, two chairs and a table and two closets. There was an attached bath with a tub/shower combo. Another door in the bathroom led to a laundry room with a washer and dryer. There was also a second bath with just a shower. The living room was huge. The kitchen had a lot of cabinets and a bar area, plus there was a separate dining area. There was quite enough room for two adults and one dog.
We had a nice view of the Toccoa River from most rooms in the house. There is a gas grill and a charcoal grill on the deck where you can cook your fresh catch – if you are lucky enough to catch anything. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch one trout this time.
There is a wood-burning stove for those cold nights, and a 42 inch TV with an excellent picture. The furnishings were comfortable. There is a large deck with a hot tub and there is a table and chairs for outdoor dining. The cabin needs some updating and repairs. It is on the older side and is showing some wear. But it was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed.
It was short walk down a path to the small dock on the Toccoa River for fishing or relaxing. When we tired of fishing and relaxing, we headed to Blue Ridge for shopping and dinner! The town of Blue Ridge is loaded with antique stores, gift shops and specialty shops – enough to keep you busy for days! The leaves had not yet started to turn colors, but the mountains were still very beautiful.
This cabin was better than our previous accommodations. I would rate it much higher if the roads to reach it had been better. I am glad we gave Blue Ridge, Georgia another try! The friendly people at Black Bear Cabin Rentals, especially Ann, were helpful, polite and answered all my questions. Ann even gave Abby a small bag of dog biscuits!

They provided me with many brochures and maps that came in handy. Ann also offered a suggestion for dinner, which turned out to be a very good choice, Pete’s Place.
