The Blue Bell Lodge in Custer State Park is very charming and historic. As you walk into the front doors you immediately get the feeling that you walked into the world of a western ranch. The log walls and stone fireplace give this lodge a real western feel that is really enhanced by the tables and chairs made of logs that fill the dinning room. If you look up you will see the ceiling lights are made from a wagon wheel.
The bar is off the dinning room and some of the barstools are saddles so you can cozy up to the bar on a saddle instead of a stool. If you are not thrilled with drinking in a saddle you can always use one of the stools instead.
I was not able to stay overnight at the Blue Bell Lodge but my visit was so pleasant that I plan on going back soon and staying for a few days. In fact we were in a bit of a hurry and we were hungry so we just ordered lunch. The lunches we ordered came fast and they were very good so we enjoyed our food. I had refreshing iced tea and buffalo meatloaf that was moist and tasty.
Before we left we took a look at the lovely little cabins that they rent out and saw a nice fire ring by each one. You can have a fire and enjoy the great out doors on your visit to the Blue Bell Lodge. Each cabin is made of logs and they have a fireplace so you can build a fire and get warmed up in the privacy of your own room. Parking is close to the rooms so you don’t have to walk far to get to your cabin.
The Blue Bell Lodge was built by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in the early 1900’s. Now you can stay there and enjoy a trail ride, take a hike or have the benefit of a cookout on a western chuck wagon complete with entertainment. Or you can just sit, relax and feel the history that you are surrounded by. It is located south of Rapid City, South Dakota in Custer State Park. You must drive through the park to get to The Blue Bell Lodge. Driving through the park is an adventure since you will probably see wildlife like buffalo, elk and deer.
